Write your reps!
Hey there folks, if you haven't done it yet, contact your reps in the Assembly and tell them to vote against AB 352 (Koretz).
This morning, I sent this letter to my rep. I just got his response, it follows my letter:
Honorable Assembly Member Klehs,
Please vote "NO" on AB 352 (Koretz). This bill pretends to be an aid to law enforcement, by requiring all semi-automatic handguns manufactured after 2007 to somehow etch microscopic markings onto every casing fired through the pistol. Supposedly, police would be able to visit a crime scene, pick up casings left at the scene, and look up the markings and know who bought the gun, and this would produce the criminal.
Chief among the number of flaws in this imaginary scheme is: Under current California law, it is, and will be, impossible for a criminal to buy one of these new "safe" guns. Before a person can buy any firearm in California, he or she must:
* Fill out a BATFE form, which requires the person to swear, under penalty of perjury, that he/she is not a criminal, is mentally sound, does not abuse drugs, is not committing domestic violence, and so on.
* Pass state and federal background checks,
* Pass a 10 day waiting period,
* Prove residency,
* Purchase a gun lock or safe to safely store the firearm.
Because of these requirements, we know for a fact that no criminals are able to purchase new firearms in California. Therefore, the basic premise of this legislation is false. Criminals will not own these "safe" handguns. No crimes will be solved. Law enforcement will not be helped.
Moreover, as this legislation is based on Koretz's imaginary "micro imprinting" technology, which doesn't exist, it will create huge R&D costs, and increase manufacturing and retail costs for California. This will result in tremendously increased expenses for state and local governments when they need to replace issued firearms.
California cannot afford this expense! California cannot afford to pass more ill-conceived legislation that will only fail to accomplish its stated objective, and impose a huge financial burden on the economy, and state and local governments.
Thank you for your consideration, please let me know your standing on the issue.
THE RESPONSE:
Thank you for your email letter in opposition to AB 352 (Koretz) - a bill that seeks to require specified semiautomatic pistols to be equipped with microscopic identifying markings which are transferred to each cartridge case when the firearm is fired.
I appreciate your viewpoint and will consider it when casting my vote in the Assembly.
Sincerely,
JOHAN KLEHS
Assemblymember

Maybe if they all get a few letters, it'll motivate them to kill the bill.
