BARF Militia

So I'm quasi in the market for a bolt-action .223 target plinker. I was thinking something like this...

Thoughts?

go to GB or even big5 and order a Savae 10FP and build one or shop used on GB. The best out of the box accurate rifle for the money. Scope and bases and you GTG.

Hit Metcalf this morning to take a neighbor shooting that had never shot a gun before. We shot pistol, rifle, and shotgun. His first time on the trap range he hit 14/25 with my benelli, second time he got 15/25. I shot 22/25 with the tactical and then 19/25 the second time around. Got some weird looks and comments on the short barrel from the usual old guys...followed by "huh, how bout that" kinda stuff after they watched me shoot :teeth

Anyone up for some trap next weekend?

No barrel length limit at Metcalf as long as it's legal to own? A lot of trap/skeet places in this area limit to 22"+.

Sunnyvale is 28"+, but Los Altos, Coyote Valley, and Metcalf have never given me any grief for 18". At least not once they see me actually shoot it, then everyone wants to try it.

But then, I'm the guy half everyone else's age there showing up with a tactical shotgun, no hip pouch, no vest, no blinders on my glasses, no NRA or DU hat, etc...

How are the pistol/rifle ranges there? Is rapid fire allowed?

No. And they WILL give you a bit of hassle for AR/AK pistols. Shotgun side there = awesome, bunch of chill old dudes, never crowded. Rifle side = overly crowded at all times, hour+ wait for a lane, lots of new shooters, everyone still friendly and everyone constantly window shopping, asking questions about each others rifles, etc. Shot an IWI Tavor with an EOTech on it from a retired Navy guy in the lane next to me today, didn't like it though. Felt recoil was more than my AR, and I had a double tap (2 shots from 1 trigger pull) which surprised the shit out of me. Bullet button device was janky on it but apparently the only CA approved option so far. Rifle wasn't particularly accurate either, at least not that either of us could shoot. 2"-ish groupings at 50 yards (yeah I know, not the greatest from all you sub-MOA shooters (aside from Roman)) out of my AR; 6-8" groups out of the Tavor. Dude said he's probably gonna sell it and just build another AR, wasn't worth the money.

Pistol side itself is chill and not *too* crowded though. Usually at least a few open lanes and where you'll find old guys with scoped .22s, .44s, etc practicing.

Los Altos raised their minimum length for manual trap ranges sometime last year or early this year due to their neighbors' complaints about noise. They made the compromise to raise the trap range barrel length because the anti-gun liberal neighbors thought longer barrels are quieter. :rolleyes This is what the range staff told me.

Yeah, It's 24" not 22" but I think it's only enforced on SAT and Sun. On a few Fridays we chatted with some volunteers there about how cool the Bineli M4 we had was to shoot and last I was There they still had not added any permanent signs.

Are you speaking of Metcalf? I've never had a lick of trouble there with any of the things I've drug out there.... AR, AK, or otherwise.

Just gonna leave this here....

I was suprised that the 1014 could do trap, but if you get on it (clay bird) fast enough it works.

I have a heavy duty fixed modified barrel.
The Remington Versamax copied the ARGO system from Benelli, it's nice to compare them side by side. With the #4 or #5 choke I can let the bird hang way out and still get it. Using that heavy scattergun for me takes some luck.
