Today I'm visiting the Yolo Sportsmen's Association in Woodland...I think that's the closest range to me here in Davis. Last I heard it costs $7 to shoot there, I hope that hasn't changed :teeth

So what you guys think of my newest purchase?

Its the Savage 10 FPXP-LEA.

Here is a link to the specs.
Linky to the Savage

Savage makes great guns. The accutrigger is really sweet. What did you do for optics?

Optics are the next thing on my list. Im really not sure what to get. Im thinking of spending in the 400 range.

You might want to check out The Sample List from SWFA. I've purchased from them before and they are a good outfit. The sample list is their clearance site. Leupold is clearing out a lot of their Vari X-III stuff now that the new VX-III is out so you can get some really good deals. I have the Super Sniper they sell on my LTR and that is around $300 and if you want to save some bucks the Bushnell 3200 10X Tactical is a great scope for about $200.

Hope that helps.

OK, got back from the Yolo Sportsmen's Association in Woodland, just about two and a half hours ago. Would've posted earlier but I was cleaning the rifle..

So, I drove down a dusty two-lane road, turned onto another dusty two-lane road, and managed to find the range. It's a mere 7.3 miles from my apartment according to my trip odometer. Sweet.

Paid up the $7 for day use, signed in, took my two targets and went out to shoot the four-four. I brought my friend Kevin with me, and we switched off every 15 rounds or so. In the end, we squeezed out about 90 rounds.

The range was pretty shitty. Not very high-quality, not very well managed. And let's just say cracking redneck jokes would not be such a great idea at YSA. I saw mullets, flannel, 1980s-era caps, pickup trucks, and the glorious absence of sophistication.

A couple guys were interested in my rifle until they "learnt" it wasn't "Am'rican" and was "one of them Commie guns." :rolleyes

So tell me if I still suck:

With the bayonet extended, my first ten shots didn't touch paper 'cause my sights weren't set :laughing :loser
Then I put 29 of the next 35 on paper (four of the missing six were on cardboard, two were missing), 19 of those 29 getting in the black, mostly in 1-2" groups, and I say mostly because there were a few strays.

On my last box of 15, the rangemaster told me the YSA doesn't tolerate shooting with extended bayonets, so I folded it and shot straight at the bullseye, not knowing where exactly my shots were landing. That was an adventure!

From 50yds with the bayonet folded, 11 of 15 landed on paper, in 1-2" groups, about five inches to the left of bullseye.

There were guys at the range shooting scoped .22s from 50yds. Some had fucked up groups (I guess they were calibrating?) but I still say that scopes are for pussies :p, unless of course you're one of those hardcore military guys who shoot at targets a mile away :thumbup That's cool with me

OK, I'll STFU now..here's pics:

See, the towel is to prevent splinters, since I was wearing a t-shirt. It was NOT for wearing on one's shoulder :laughing :twofinger

Thanks for tuning in!

hey ratters, heres the shop i was telling you about

Cool. They have some sweet stuff. Way out of my price range though. :(

webberstyle- 1-2" groups at 50yrds. with open sights is pretty good. So is shooting that thing 45 times. Ouch.

Sucks how the ranges freak out about the bayonet. Chabot does as well. Problem is that is how they are made to shoot. Oh well. Guess they figure those bayonets are more dangerous than someone with a loaded weapon.

A CZ75 rocks. Great gun at a good price.

I went with the DE Baby Eagle, which is a bulked-up version of the CZ. It fit my hand better. No regrets.

I like the Baby Eagle. It is a very "clean" looking design.

Yeah, the Baby Eagle sure does look good, and there's no doubt there are tons of choices out there..from ugly but workhorse Rugers, to really nice shit like Les Baer 1911s.

I might sound like a poser by asking, but how tough do you sound when you say you have a "Baby Eagle" ? :p jk
The B-eagle is made by Magnum Research as well, and not IMI, right? So, Minnesota-made instead of Israeli-made?

Magnum Research is/was IMI's US distributor, so it's all the same.

I like the Baby Eagle too. If you don't like calling it that, call it the Jericho instead - same thing.

I have an IMI-made Timber Wolf pump-action .357 rifle, it's a royal hoot! Those IMI folks design great guns.

So when I move to Idaho, I am going to need a carry piece.

What do you recommend? Needs to be lightweight, accurate, easliy conceled and as powerful as possible.

Ideas?

All the ones I've seen were IMI made, but I think they do make some under license in Minnesota. IMI calls them the Jericho in Israel but it is the same pistol.

Kimber CDP Ultra. That or the Para P12 with either the LDA or standard single action trigger. I have one of the first ones and it is a tidy little pistol with 12rounds of .45 ready to go.

If you can hedge on the power, the Kel-tec .380 is REALLY light and thin and will easily fit in a pocket. Can't get them here in California though.

Dude, the possibilities are endless!

Kahrs and Glocks spring to mind first - they are very streamlined and simple, and come in multiple sizes.

Then there's the Walther / S&W P99s, and Steyr M or S series...

The Springfield and Kimber compacts...

S&W revolvers...

Keltec itty bitty pocket autos...

Beretta's little 9mm and Tomcat...

Wait till you get out there to really shop around, because there are far more models of handguns for sale outside CA (because of CA's stupid drop safety test requirements). Plus, they have Full Capacity magazines out there! :cry

Plus, if you get your CCW first, it might exempt you from lots of the paperwork, background check, and waiting period, if there are any in Idaho. I know for Utah, CCW means it's almost cash-and-carry, just fill out the yellow form for the dealer's records, and off you go.

yeah, CCWs and "assault weapons"....I guess I'm gonna have to look for a job in Arizona or something after college. Raytheon has labs in Arizona..I'd love to go make AMRAAM and AIM-9s for them :)
Oh, if only I could get paid Bay Area money and live in the Deep South :p :laughing

Oh I will surely get a CCW. I hear that you can apply at the DMV when you get a license.:teeth

Guess I will have to shop there after I move out there. Prices will probably be cheaper too.

You could buy whatever you want and use my address up there. You will need to leave them at my house, but I promise to take really good care of them.:laughing:teeth
