BARF Militia

Well now that I know its a refurb I won't be a pansy with it and will go shooting with it. Now to ask a silly question I bought his thing 8 years ago in Virginia. Do I need to register it in CA? If so will they give me shit for it having a bayonet and me not having registered it in the past 4 years?

Rifles aren't registered in California, only pistols and assault weapons. You are just fine bringing it with you. I have a 1954 Tula SKS that hasn't been out of the safe in probably seven years. Bought it at a gunshow in Santa Barbara for $150 when you could just walk out with them.

Hope you make it Sunday. I'll be bringing my new Yugo as well as several other rifles and some pistols.

Shotline- Slam fires are NOT A GOOD THING. You should get that fixed as soon as possible. Many ranges restrict SKSs to two loaded rounds cause they are kinda notorious for them. My Bushmaster Bullpup did that and it scared the hell out of me. Its problem was the receiver separating from the lower due to a crappy design. Bushmaster updated the whole thing for me, though it still finds ways to annoy and frustrate me.

Hey Ken,
Ever shot 1oz. 1600fps hollowpoint slugs from the shotty? Anyone else? Remington 870? M1?

I've done it from my Winchester Defender. I had already shot about seventy five rounds of bird shot so the shoulder was already pretty bruised up. Didn't tickle.

I much prefer the "tacticle" slugs that shoot a reduced load. Drop a person as quick as any.

Yeah - two weekends ago. gsxrbabe brought three boxes of the stuff to the ranch to shoot "for fun". They didn't kick as much through the SPAS as they did in the Benelli M1, but jeez, those slugs push hard in both directions.

they punch nice holes in dishwashers, though.

What exactly is the danger of a slam fire? What is a slam fire?

Slam fire is when a semi-auto's bolt closes, and the firing pin flies forwards like a kid in a car without his/her seat belt on, but instead of hitting the windshield, the firing pin hits the primer, and fires the chambered round.

My buddy had a MAS that would slam off one or two extra rounds sporadically for a single trigger pull.

It can be dangerous because you don't always want the gun to fire when you're just closing the bolt to chamber a round.
Oh yeah, and when the gun's off doing slam-fires, there's no way to make it stop.

Good explanation zefflyn. One other important point is that it may fire before the bolt is fully closed which is a VERY BAD THING. Just imagine your face getting sprayed with hot gasses and brass. Not a lot of fun.

I don't know if this is a huge problem with the SKS..from what I hear it's due to cosmo and dirt still being caught in the mechanism. That link I posted earlier has the modified parts that eliminate this problem if cleaning doesn't stop it. Great post Z-Diddy!

Can't wait to get my M59 :cry

It is mostly a well reported problem cause there are so many of the freaking things out there. I don't know if it happens at any greater rate than in a garand or other semi. Yeah, a good cleaning helps. Using military ammo with hard primers helps. I thing someone makes a firing pin with a return spring as well.

My Russian one has never done it and I put about 1k rounds through it before it was put away many moons ago. Too bad you can't make it to the shoot. We'll have to do another one during the holidays.

Yeah, I wish I could make it to the shoot, but it's just bad timing for me, with the school quarter starting the following day, I have to be in Davis :( There'll be other times, I'm not in a hurry anyway, since I'm pretty low on 7.62x54R and the M59 isn't in yet (and I'll have to spend a couple bucks on the SKS to make it cooler...like that 1" rubber butt-pad and that steel bipod you can get online for $15, among other things :teeth).

Aka run away gun, the gun fireing with the bolt open could also throw shrapnel from the caseing. Rembere when I had some of that shit loged in my arm? Not fun.

Hey check out this Romanian homeboy who fell while waiting for the Pope..notice everyone holding SKS carbines :teeth

I bet he did that to avoid the embarrassment of being seen in public with an SKS.

I bet he scraped his face up though!

HAHAHA Pwn3d!1!!!

That happens during formation when you lock your knees while standing. In Navy boot camp they cautioned you not to lock your knees during the graduation ceremony for this reason. Something about a combination of the heat and standing with your knees locked for long periods of time can make you passout. It was kinda funny during the ceremony you would occassionally hear a rifle fall to the ground followed closely by a thump.:laughing

It's a better gun when you clean it twice a day, keep it dry, don't let it touch the ground, and pray to God twice a day to let bullets come next time you squeeze the trigger in a firefight. :laughing :twofinger

You don't know shit. Until you've spent some time with the AR, and really knows what it's all about, you're just repeating what every other ignorant dumbshit out there says about the M16 series. I've spent days crawling around the fucking Panamanian jungle with one, swam with it across a couple of swamps, and all you gotta do is drain the bolt and the fucking thing will fire. Weak caliber issues aside, there's a reason why it has lasted as long as it has in our military.
