BARF Militia

My birthday present finally arrived. It was my birthday last week and since nobody got me anything I picked up a Benelli Nova for myself. I bought it to go turkey hunting with a friend. I hope I get to go. It has the Max4 real tree cammo. Can you see it?

Sweet! Turkey hunting sounds like a blast. Nothing like killing your own bird for thanksgiving.

That's not very much ammo, you need some more. :teeth

Have you shot it yet? Would you let a fellow BARFer who's been thinking about buying a Nova try it out? :angel :angel

I actually just picked it up today. I was supposed to go shooting tomorrow with my neighbor and his daughter but I think we might get weathered out. Plus I'll be picking up some more ammo at the gun show. ;)

I have no problem letting you try out the Nova. I'll let you know when I'm heading to the range to pattern this thing for turkey.

Right on, thanks! And I'll bring up my 627 so you can see if 8 little holes are just as good as 6 big ones!

DO IT WITH A BOW!

or else stick a nipple over the barrel so the fish and game can't hear it.

Take it to the next level and eat the flesh RAW!

I've caught and eaten raw trout in a pinch when backpacking (hungry) in the high country but I'll pass on the red and pink flesh thanks. :hand I'd eat my emergency candle first. When you chew up and swallow a candle to curb your hunger you KNOW your hungry.

I picked up my SKS yesterday....

...and like a good friend, I went to Ken's house to clean it :laughing :blush Don't worry Ken, everything I own now smells like cosmo and Hoppe's No.9 :laughing

I was surprised at how easy it was to field-strip the thing completely..I mean, the only time a tool was needed was for removing the trigger assembly. Kickass.

So, this '59 model SKS got stripped, dipped in solvent, cleaned, dried, oiled, reassembled..and ended up looking somewhat better than when I got it. I ordered a better-looking Yugo wooden stock off Ebay, so I'll be sanding and clearcoating that soon :teeth

And now, for the pics:

You can see how the stock isn't very good..all banged up and such :( But at least the metal parts are in very good shape

Yes...

I kicked all the Swedish supermodels out of my bed just to pose for this shot :laughing :twofinger

I just use the tip of a bullet to remove the trigger assembly. You'll love that gun not much recoil and those sites are almost always right on.

That was what suprised me, all my shots were right in the black at 50yrds right off the bat.

Miran, a lot of people are using easy off to get all the cosmoline off the stock then sanding and rubbing in boiled linseed oil. Seems to give a really nice result.

Did you make sure to get all of the cosmoline out of the bolt? That is the most crucial thing. I ended up baking mine in the oven to loosen up the cosmoline and then blasting it with gun scrubber. That is the biggest problem with slam fires, when the firing pin won't move freely due to the cosmoline.

Took me about three hours to clean all the crap out of whole rifle.

BTW, I like the clean look of the 59.

Miran, what model is that. It's not the Yugo is it? Where is the grenade launching crap?

Tom, you have the newer version M59/66, made from 1966 and on...I have the M59, made from '59-'65.

Yours has the grenade launcher (err, not anymore :p), night sights, 1" rubber pad on the butt, and the gas tube cutoff for the g-launcher. The M59 doesn't have all that. It's just like a Russian SKS pretty much. Supposedly harder to find, but who cares, it's not exactly a collector item, especially in the condition I got it in :cry

Pretty much every Yugo SKS you find that's NOT in unissued condition was shot to shit by the YNA as a training rifle. I showed it to my dad, and he was like, "Oh yeah, we shot these things at the range every other day." :laughing Great..the YNA had compulsory service for all men over 18..so I'm sure the guys who weren't too thrilled about being in the army took REAL good care of theirs :cry :laughing

In response to paragraph 1: I used Hoppe's No.9 on the whole thing. It's not sticky anymore..but I'll let it sweat the rest of the cosmo out as soon as we get a sunny day in Davis.

In response to paragraph 2: I didn't manage to get the bolt itself broken down to clean the pieces individually, so I just dipped the thing in Hoppe's for a couple of minutes. It took me about an hour and a half with Ken and Mike helping me...so, six hands working on one rifle, we got done fast. :teeth Should I attempt to get the bolt open and clean it out by hand? It looked like I had to tap a pin out or something...

Man am I the only one who hand problems with sites right off the bat. I went out and bought the front sight tool because I was consistantly off to the left. Once I got the front sight tool it was all good after that.

Ohh and about the bolt I stripped the gun completely down and used my works sovent sink to clean out the bolt. Worked like a charm.
