What's the price range on decent scopes?
...and what makes a $1500 scope better than a $500 one?
Curious...
A decent scope will cost you between $200 and $2000 depending upon your needs and application.
Glass, coatings, construction, features and name are the reasons for wildly different prices on scopes.
A $1500 scope will have excellent glass and coatings, be very repeatable and offer a very clear, bright, and smooth sight picture.
That said, a $500 leupold will serve most people just fine. Even the Bushnell Elite 3200 Tactical is a fine scope for about $200, just don't expect the brightness or resolution of a Nightforce. In fact, Barret includes that scope with it's police package for the M99 .50 cal.
I have an SWFA Super Sniper on my LTR that was about $300. It has a nice bright sight picture, and is very repeatable, but the clicks aren't as precise and the sight picture loses clarity (a little bit) as you move toward the edge. A really nice scope doesn't do that, but for my purpose the scope works beautifully.
I have a $200 Burris on my .270 that works just fine as well, but I'm not taking 400 yard shots at dusk where the extra brightness and resolution will help big time.
Hope that helps some.
BTW, if you are looking for scopes, check out
www.swfa.com and click on their "Sample List" page. They are blowing out a lot of the Vari-X III scopes for some very excellent prices because of the new VXIII model.
