BARF Militia

What a great-looking rifle, JP!

Ezekiel~Joe brought his 1943 (1941?) Mosin Nagant to the BARF shoot this a.m. I'll post a picture of it soon.

And 2nsane's buddy Alex brought his 1941 (1943?) Enfield. All the wood on it looks to be Indian rosewood, so beautiful. He picked it up yesterday at the Cow Palace and kindly let me shoot it. Powerful thing. Kicked my right shoulder hard.

weak_link and Ratters let me shoot their 10/22 Rugers. I think I've found my first rifle.

Thanks! Yeah, I've got the C&R disease. I used to love handguns, then AR's and AK's, and while I still want an AK -- I'm hot over these old rifles. I love how you can meet someone, pay cash and walk away, I love the surplus ammo and the heritage behind the rifles, and I love how the things look! I'll update my post with a real-camera photo tonight. That's an iPhone pic up there and it doesn't do it justice.

Now, onto modern rifles.

For those who shoot Wolf steel-cased ammunition. We all know it's dirty and this and that, but all in all, it's good plinking ammo. Well, let me tell you, do not mix steel cased ammunition and brass cased ammunition.

This isn't news to most people, we've all read it on the internet... but after shooting thousands of rounds of Wolf ammunition I finally had my first real failure that made me heed to this warning.

The barrel / chamber was warm, I had fired a lot of steel cased Wolf through it and then a brass cased Federal XM193 went into the chamber. Walla, it would no longer extract and the casing was JAMMED in the chamber. Essentially glued in place.

What happened? The laquer on the Wolf steel case ammunition wore off in the heat, which doesn't matter when you fire more wolf / steel, but then the brass went in and couldn't deal with it. It was essentially glued in place and I had to bang it out from the muzzle side with a cleaning rod.

So it's not an internet myth. Do not mix steel cased ammunition and brass cased ammunition in your AR's while shooting at a given time. At the very least, let the rifle cool down before you switch over to brass.

And even then, it may do it after a couple of rounds.

Never mix cases without a cleaning in between.

New pics (real camera) from shooting and of the new rifle.

You can see how messy Cow Mountain is in this area. In one aspect it's really sad that the "land" is this messy (you can't even see the shooting area, it's worse!), but on the other hand it is kind of nice to be able to go to a place where you can shoot stuff and watch it break apart and blow up without people freaking out. It may be messy, ugly and bad for the "planet," but it's in a dug out bowl in the middle of nowhere and hell, why not.

The shitheads to our right (we're the guys shooting AR's) were the only douschebags we saw up there all day. They were, as you can see, standing in front of their benches while shooting trap and making all kinds of noise / being general unsafe jackasses. This is what you deal with when you go to Cow Mountain on a weekend.

Targets -- a mere 50 (100? I hates numberz! Distance is numberz! Ergo distance is too much for me to calculate! Aargh!) yards away ...
