Yep, no handguns until your 21.

If you want a hunting rifle/target rifle you might want to look into the following calibers of .223, .308, 7.62X39, plus a bunch more.

As far as home defense you really can't beat a 12ga shotgun. I wouldn't be using a hunting rifle for home defense because if you miss or even hit your target the bullet will probably go through 3 houses before it stops.
 
Go to Big 5 Sporting Goods, buy a Russian M38, M44, or M91/30 bolt-action rifle (7.62mm x 54R) for $75.

It'll put hair on your chest.

Set up a savings account for the pistol fund. You wanna have about $2000 saved up by the time you turn 21 so you can go on a shopping spree at the gun store :teeth

Buy yourself a Ruger 10/22 and learn to shoot it. Ammo is cheap, they are accurate and you can learn to pull the trigger without flinching from recoil. And it is a gun you will never outgrow and always value as part of your collection.

When you feel it is time to move up, check out the gun boards such as thehighroad.com and calguns.net for advice. I would look at a nice bolt action in .308 as ammo is relatively common and inexpensive and you can hunt almost anything in north america with it.

I was thinkin something with bolt action, but since im left handed, will this be a problem? I know there are rifles with the bolt on the right side, but will my selection be smaller? I'm gonna go check out the gun store and big five soon.

Also, what kind of waiting period do I have to endure?
 
I can't answer your other questions, but a 10 day wait period, for any firearm.

Don't forget to tack on $30 for registration of any new firearm.
 
I'm left handed too, you can get left handed models of guns but I just get the right handed model normally. Its not that bad.
 
I'm left-handed..so I taught myself how to shoot right-handed. 20/20 in each eye, so it don't matter too much.

Check out the Russian M44 bolt-action carbine. It makes a nice fireball:

I am right handed but shoot left handed due to eyes, left one is better.

I have never had a problem shooting a right handed rifle left handed, the issue is when you rechamber a round. Your right arm is on the stock out past the middle of the barrel and you have to remove it to operate the bolt. This means that you cannot rechamber with the rifle on your shoulder unless you have a really strong left hand.

The only other issue that really isn't an issue is with semi-auto rifles, the shells eject past your face. Doesn't cause a problem really but sometimes it can blow smoke and or gun oil in your face.
 
M1A's make good guns for lefties. The Safety is ambidexterous, and the op rod handle is on the right side, perfect for a lefty.

Yeah, but they are $1500 dollars of goodness :blush

Or you can get the M1 Garand for about $500, or a Mini-14 for about $400.
 
I've heard complaints that Ruger's Mini guns aren't that accurate, buy my mini-30 shoots pretty good. I keep almost forgetting that I have it, and every once in a while think about selling it, but after I shoot it, I remember how great it is.

I made a trip out to the ranch yesterday with my brother-in-law and a buddy, and we did some shooting. The below picture was taken from at about 6x zoom, the next one will be at 0x zoom. there is an orange clay sitting on top of a rock, next to that blue barrel, and the Mini-30 demolished the rock with a single 10-round magazine and iron sights (I think I missed once).

Here's the range at 0x power. Normally we set up on the shelf lying on it's side, and shoot at stuff hanging from or on the frame, or set clay pigeons all up and down the hill.

There's a can on the left post of the frame, my buddy shot it with his 9mm, FMJ, and his rounds were bouncing off! One bounced back the 25 or so feet, and landed right between us!
Turns out it was some kind of super thick stainless steel fixture, and only FMJ rifle could penetrate it. Always wear eye protection, and know what you're shooting at!
