Big, Bad Treehouse

We then began cutting the first pieces of lumber for the floor joists:

I see Willow helped too! :laughing :love Looks great Andy! Earthquake proof. LOL

Earthquake proof. LOL

It'll be interesting to see how wind proof the whole thing is. We had winds up to 150 mph this past winter. That's a bit high of normal, but no unheard of.

The structure won't present much of a broadside surface to the wind and it's low enough on the tree not to act as much of a reverse pendulum. In about five years' time, the root system should adapt to the additional load.

Snow weight was a consideration, though it's mitigated a bit by the fact the treehouse is fully inside the drip line of the tree and won't get the same accumulation as it would in the open.

Awesome design and work, can't wait to see it finished. :hail :Popcorn

Better hide this one from your hubby! Of all the people on BARF he's most likely to try this. (I'm willing to lend my services gratis if he does decide to build. :laughing)

This is the last shot taken before my wife and kids had to head home for the week:

As of this writing, all four diagonal braces are installed and the platform is as solid as the deck on my house. I'll go up for the weekend on Thursday evening and begin installing the flooring.

When finished, the structure will be an octagonal gazebo whose "foundation" should support about 18,000 pounds. I may or may not try to place a roof this year, but the structure for one will be in place. We are still sorting out how to access the treehouse from the ground. Short term, we'll use a ladder, but longer term, I may build a cable supported bridge from another tree with a staircase leading up to the bridge.

Spiral staircase... and the obligatory zip line to get back down...

Seriously, give her my best attagirl. Awesome is right.

18,000 lbs. Glad yer not over-engineering it or anything.:laughing

PS. This project has zipline written all over it.

A big +1... the zip line up there now is so much fun.... but out of a treehouse??? Oh hellz yes!!!

Andy, you have to be the coolest dad ever!!!

So cool on so many levels !!

I still have waking moments when I can re-live taking a nap way out on an oak tree limb (in a seat built for that purpose) and being rocked by the warm breeze :)

DAD of the year :thumbup

I think we're all on the same page, or in the same tree or something. :laughing

I had to stop myself from asking you if it will have a kegerator. It's for the kids, it's for the kids, it's for the kids.....but with an 18,000 lb capacity....hmm... I guess you could have a soft-serve ice cream machine.... right by the zipline to the lake exit.
