Thad was mounted on his 1957 BSA set-up
for desert racing ... he'd raced it at the
last Catalina GP, back in 2010, I guess ...

... a rock had bounced up
and cut on oil line under the
BSA's engine ...

(Edit: and the Giants WIN in the
13th inning! :party)

So, we were kind of stuck ...
Thad had felt the engine
tighten up as his oil left the
bike and shut it off right away ...

None of us had extra oil,
but we did have a tow rope
as a last option ... Thad was like
to heck with that towing nonsense
and went to work ...

... putting my parasol to good use ...

We purchased 3/4 of a quart of
oil from a passing tourist and
borrowed a half-quart from the
Indian by tipping it on its side a couple
of times and spilling it out of the gas-tank-located
oil-tank into a half of a
half liter water bottle ...

We took stock of supplies and tools ...
Kalle snipped two inches off the
overflow/breather hard line from his oil tank, which
Thad taped up on either end and
slipped into the cut line, making all
fast with bailing wire ... :ride

Thad kicked the BSA to life,
and the fix held ... we doubled
back to Beatty to buy more oil and
to reassess the fix and our options
for the rest of the ride ...

So, the fix was dry in Beatty, and
after getting more oil and gas,
Thad decided to give Titus another
shot ... what could possibly go
wrong? My bike was still showing
12.4 volts ... :laughing

So, off we went ... :ride

... the top of Titus was in better shape
than I'd ever seen it, recently graded
with hardly any washboard ...

Awesome trail fix!! Tipping the Indian over to get more oil is pure gold. Passing tourist "Sold" you oil? That's poor trail etiquette.

The Parasol for the win! I always carry one because of your past reports.

Love that last picture above.
Like them all.
Great adventure. Cool bikes.
Were/are there baffles in that BSA exhaust?

Another good one John!

Yes, the passing tourists ... I felt it was important
to make the offer, and he accepted ... :laughing
Thad reimbursed me, and I bought him a beer,
and the tourist will probably help a biker next
time ... :thumbup

Super-awesome trail fix, Thad covered
himself in glory by choosing to go finish
the ride ... all credit to the shade of the
parasol ... :laughing

Yes, no baffles ... that BSA sounded wonderful
on the throttle in the deep gravel of the slot-canyon! :ride
Thad says he won his class on that bike at the
Catalina GP ... he wheelies it like a champ!

Thanks for reading and posting! :thumbup

Some men have signed that plate. :cool.

Some men have signed that plate. :cool.

Yes, Thad had some fun stories ...

He won an AFM
novice production championship
on an RD 350 in the late '70s
and got the #6 plate in the club ...
which turned into a ride on an RG 500 and
a GS 1000 Superbike ride ...

He podiumed in
an AMA national and was caught up in the
crash at Elkheart Lake that ended Bruce Hammer's
racing career ... "I center punched the almost full
gas tank that had come off Bruce's bike and it
broke the front end off my bike ..."
John Bettencourt was right behind Thad and
saw the whole thing ...

Really fun to spend the day riding with
someone involved in those glory days of
AMA Nationals ... :thumbup

I think he may have purchased
the BSA from Dick Mann ... I know
he said he was going to call him and
ask about the rock cutting the oil line ... :laughing
