Death Valley Rally ...

20161014-195823.jpg

Lon had his father, (and AMA Hall of famer) Max Bubeck's, old Indian 101 Scout ... "the best motorcycle Indian ever made" ... from 1928 to 1931 ...

... happy owner and Brad, who refused to
take more than $10 even when more was offered ...
he had us roll the bike into the shade as
soon as we got there and had us on our
way in half an hour ... :ride

Before my Norton was vintage a gentleman in Ozark Arkansas welded up my header pipe using coat hanger for welding rod. I was pleased to get back on the road but now considering inflation I got hosed paying $10 same as you:laughing

... I think Brad used cheap bailing wire on the Tiger,
so you may have gotten your money's worth with
the quality Ozark-coat-hanger welding rod! :laughing

... stopping at the fun bike
shop in Kernville to a buy a spare
19" tube
for the Tiger and a 16" spare tube for the
Indian ...

That's the CycleSmiths, owned by Wendy Crockett and her husband. She is a bad ass long distance rider and a kind human to boot. I'm a huge fan. :love

... charging the Tiger's battery with
the Indian's generator ...
Kalle's brilliant idea! :ride

... my solution would have
been to lay in the dirt and cry .... :laughing

I would have cried, too. :laughing

The love and passion that goes into these bikes is amazing. They are keeping moto history alive.

Hey TWT!

Based on your recommendation, I turned around to
go back to CycleSmiths so I could go in and meet
Wendy ... she said to say "hi!" to Reama when I saw her ... :cool

... wonder if the tire-guy with the limp is her husband?

... cool shop with a fun clientele:

... the town was packed with the car show,
with all the inns and campgrounds full ... this couple
was kind enough to invite us to share their campsite after we
chatted about bikes for a few minutes ... :gsxrgrl
... we were off over Sherman Pass though ...

+1! :ride Kalle and I have attended this event in
2010, 2012 and now in 2016 ... we got to meet
Max Bubeck :)rose) at the 2010 rally ... :party

The bikes are fantastic but the experienced
motorcycle guys are the real treat ... :thumbup

I think the oldest rider (on the green '37 Chief),
John (in the hat),
was eighty-three!

So much good stuff John!!! I love seeing folks in their 80s on bikes and listening to them talk about their life on bikes is a real treat. Like a personal walk through moto history.

Yes, they were there, and have the stories! :thumbup
The SFMC still rides with the Passadina Motorcycle Club
who put on the Greenhorn Enduro in the 1930s, an
"On Any Sunday" style desert race that Max Bubeck
won on a 500-pound Indian Four back in the 1930s ... :wow

20161018-082353.jpg

... Kalle and myself won the "Long Distance Indian" and
"Long Distance Triumph" awards by riding down from
San Francisco ... we were the only guys to ride to the rally ...
I think John told me one of the tricks to riding into your
80s is to buy a truck ... :laughing:ride

... just one example of the many off-roading opportunities
in our fair national parks ... :laughing
... this was a '41 Knucklehead of a pair that had
ridden through Titus Canyon the day
before we did ... :thumbup:ride

... at 33 years-old, Bobby was the youngest
motorcycle guy at the rally ... a full fifty years
separated him from John ... :party

... another rock, another vintage bike
not holding oil anymore ... :laughing

I plan on riding Titus Canyon again and Can't be bothered with broken oil lines. So I picked some 11 gauge steel today and got to work on making a skid plate Death Valley worthy bash plate.

It protects the elbow I broke and the case.

Should help protect the case when I ride off curbs in San Francisco. We'll see.

Birds of a Feather

The exhaust on my chief started to rattling coming over Tioga Pass. I figured it was an internal baffle. So I took off my muffler today and "Suprise!". same problem John had. Cracked exhaust. Didn't take much to weld it back up.

Kalle, that skid plate is bad-ass! It's probably better if you wheelie off the curbs here in the city though...

Cabrito might be right.

It's rad to see you fabbing your own custom parts.
