Death Valley Rally ...

Great Thad stories.
Would make for a great campfire chat.
Thanks for sharing.

And what Budman said... Moto Icons signed on that number plate.
Men among riders.

Hey m0t0_ryder,

The names on the BSA number plate are
cool, I didn't notice them until I was
taking pics of the bike ... :laughing:thumbup

gravel was deep at the bottom, ha. :ride

Hey Cabrito,

Yes, the Indian got whacked too ... :laughing

Hi bpw,

It's the So Cal Chapter of the AMCA ...
They do the Max Bubeck Death Valley Rally
every year since 1986 ... this one was number 30! :ride
If you poke around a bit on the link you
can find some pics of the rally ...

They do a rally every year at Anza Borrego, also, and
have a monthly ride, I hear ... :thumbup

Yep that was my 48 chief. When I looked down at the gas station I was thinking my trip was over and I'ld be looking for another 48 case. Here's another angle of the puddle.

Not sure if it was the deep gravel or a rock at the end of Titus Canyon. But something hit the oil return elbow that screws into the block. So the engine was still getting fed oil but not all the oil was being returned to the tank.

It turns out to be a common issue with Indian 74" and 80" Chiefs. Jim Coe who was at the Ralley had the same problem a few years ago. His elbow broke clean off at the jam nut. He was able to extract the old elbow for the case and he just threaded what he had left into the case without the jam nut and finish his ride.

I wasn't so lucky. My elbow tore and there wasn't enough threads to use and what threads that were there were twisted.

My plan was to jb weld up the hole and pray it held for the ride back to San Francisco. But Jim Coe jumped in and offered an elbow from one of his 48 Chiefs.

He had brought two bikes. As he said "One for Parts".

Jim said he never uses the elbow with the screen on it Indian Part #418029. He says they drill out the elbow to fit the screen which makes it weaker. He prefers to use the elbow that screws into the oil pump Indian Part #24B16.
