Do You Mountain Bike?

:rant

You don't catch colds from being exposed to rain/cold -- you get it from a virus:|

I haven't been sick in years -- and I used to always swim in the bay and run in the rain -- I rarely catch colds.

Let's hit the snow! When?

And you catch that virus because being in the rain and cold makes your immune system work overtime and it will be harder to fight off that virus

I rode on Saturday. Just a city ride on the road bike. Went out to the beach from Noe Valley area. Then up by the cliff house and over baker beach and by the bridge and down to Crissy Field. From there through Fishermans Wharf, down the Embarcadero, up 3rd street and townsend, up 11th to Market street and I topped it off by going up 17th street. Don't know how many know how steep that hill is and this was the first time I did it on the road bike. Was a nice topper.

I want to take my son (who is 6 now) up for snowboarding. I have not been since he was born so I am going to be rusty. His mom wants him to ski because she talked to some doc who says snowboarding is harder on the body then skiing. I say snowboarding is more fun who cares what he says. The doc probably never went snowboarding either. He is probably a ski snob... :rolleyes

Went to China Camp and Tamarancho today. It was cold but the last few days of rain were driving me nuts. China Camp definitely is not very bad after the rain. Tamarancho was pretty muddy tho.

Rode up Eldridge to the top of Mt Tam, got to see a little snow here and there.

At the top you could imagine it was kinda warm, out on the Bolinas ridge it was OK, but it was freakin cold coming back down thru Laurel Dell and Rocky Ridge!

Forecast says no rain for today and tomorrow:party

There's a group of us meeting at China Camp ~130pm today:ride

Hey Bikers -

So, I've decided I want to get back into riding and get my ass off the couch/barstool. So far, so good but my old bike just isn't comfortable and making the changed I'd like make a new bike a better value. I've done a lot of searching online but it's generally hard to find decent reviews on any of them...

I've ridden a few 29ers lately and think they're just about perfect for me (way into the Clydesdale category - 6'2 and 260#) and my riding (cross-country mostly, some "urban" riding, nothing too hardcore). I'm looking for a hardtail only and would like a decent groupo - SLX/X7-ish but XT/X9 would be great. I'd like to be at ~$1500 but the bikes at $2k are a bit nicer (of course). I tend to keep my bikes a long (LONG!) time so flipping it isn't a major concern.

I'm concerned that the frames will handle my weight and tendency to break them (previously broke weld on a Cannondale and Specialized). So, sturdy wheelsets are important.

The Gary Fisher Paragon is on the top of the list due to the components and geometry but recent broken frames seem to dominate reviews..

ADMIN EDIT - https://www.crazylennysebikes.com/what-happened-to-fisher-bikes/

The Specialized Stumpjumper seems great but is it beefy enough and is the geometry appropriate for a 29er?

So, what else should I consider in this range? Best 29er geometry? Something else I should consider?

Thanks!

The 4.5 mile "All-Mountain" loop that starts just down the street from me

When DVille comes around, I'm thinking the local terrain will have me plenty ready for it. Here's a short tour of a 4.5 mile loop that starts just down the street from me:

The trailhead

Out of the trees, the climb continues

The higher you go, the more techy the climb gets

Almost there - just a few more rocks to clean

Going down

A little further into the descent

The end!

4.5 miles in distance with 870 feet of climbing, I typically finish the loop in just over 40 minutes. The photos might not show it, but the 1.1 mile descent bears a resemblance to to Pauley Creek @ D-Ville.

I'm not a great downhiller by a long shot, and tend to have at least a couple of "oh shit" moments every time I ride the trail. In the interest of self-preservation, I tend to spend more time on my road bike - I'm about 5 road rides to 1 trail ride at the moment.

Still - SLO is a good time!
