Do You Mountain Bike?

I vow to ride my ass off in the month of Jan. Both road and Mountain. Anyone up for a romp through the Headlands? I am trying to leave my month open but it can close real fast. I hope it dosn't rain to much. And everyother weekend I plan on taking my son for a ride. Probably in Foster City along the water front. He is training for the 25 mile Diabetes ride. He is only 6.

That loop looks like a good time. Maybe run through it a few times.

You could run through it a few times, or you could combine it with other loops in the area that are even tougher, both technically and aerobically.

Another neat thing - night riding is legal on that loop. San Luis Obispo is a nice place to live for trail riders :)

I would like to get out more, maybe East Bay Hills? Lake Chabot?

The dirt at Chabot turns to clay when it's wet, sticks to your tires, and becomes pretty much unrideable. I know a pretty good loop out there that has a fair amount of singletrack though.

I've only ridden it once so I don't know how the dirt is during rainy season, but Redwood Regional Park might be a better option?

Redwood should be OK...you just have to give it 3-4 days after it rains to be rideable..

Mikey, since you've never done it, you should ride Redwood while you're in town.

Hey Bikers -

So, I've decided I want to get back into riding and get my ass off the couch/barstool. So far, so good but my old bike just isn't comfortable and making the changed I'd like make a new bike a better value. I've done a lot of searching online but it's generally hard to find decent reviews on any of them...

I've ridden a few 29ers lately and think they're just about perfect for me (way into the Clydesdale category - 6'2 and 260#) and my riding (cross-country mostly, some "urban" riding, nothing too hardcore). I'm looking for a hardtail only and would like a decent groupo - SLX/X7-ish but XT/X9 would be great. I'd like to be at ~$1500 but the bikes at $2k are a bit nicer (of course). I tend to keep my bikes a long (LONG!) time so flipping it isn't a major concern.

I'm concerned that the frames will handle my weight and tendency to break them (previously broke weld on a Cannondale and Specialized). So, sturdy wheelsets are important.

The Gary Fisher Paragon is on the top of the list due to the components and geometry but recent broken frames seem to dominate reviews..

The Specialized Stumpjumper seems great but is it beefy enough and is the geometry appropriate for a 29er?

So, what else should I consider in this range? Best 29er geometry? Something else I should consider?

Thanks!

I'd go steel if I were you. Strong and flexible. Aluminum is super strong but so stiff that when it's ready to go it go's. I'm riding a Marin Pine mountain 29er HT now. It is sold as a single speed but has a hanger and cable nubs installed for a geared set up. I'm in love with it. The stock component setup is top notch though in your case I would invest in a better wheel set.

Again I will say that steel is your best bet. I'd get hydraulic disk brakes with 8" rotors if I were you too. I don't really need them but I'm running them on my Marin. It would make a world of difference for you I think.

Oh yeah and though they retail for 1800 I've see them new on ebay for around 900 fairly often. It's a pretty good deal. You don't need front gears anyway gorilla man, just make it a 1 X 9.

yeah mang....that place must get boring after a while

It dose get boring. I mostly go for the workout. You could say it is like someone going to the gym all the time. I do go to Skeggs sometimes but never get to stay all day. I ride with some guys and the ride is over in 1 1/2 hours and it leaves me unsaticified. I don't really know anymore trails around to go to and I have been trying to hook up with some on here but it always seems to be on a weekend when I have to take care of my son. With him Ihave to ride on the road. He was bugging me to go today but we didn't. It was a nice day too. I am free next weekend. Anyone have any suggestions on where to ride or if maybe there is a ride going on, and I can tag along?
