I got the biking bug a few weeks ago and I've been lootking into a variety of bikes. I have an old Franken-bike (KHS Alite HT, XT everything, Avid BB7s, etc) that I got running again but I just couldn't get comfortable. So, I took a trip down to my LBS and checked out a few 29ers. Wow - finally a bike that fits me! Since then, I've test ridden any 29er I could get my hands on (GF, Specialized, Custom Niner, Surly Katate Monkey, etc). I contemplated a custom build but it was going to be too expensive and the Fisher just felt right...so I picked up a new Gary Fisher Paragon! It's got a nice set up for what I paid - Fox F29 fork, SRAM X-9 F/R deraileurs, Avid Juicy 5 brakes, etc.

I know what some of you are thinking - "But Brandon, you're a super clydesdale AND a ginger ape, what if you break it?" That's why I went with a large mfgr with a lifetime warranty. "What about the wheelset?!" I'm gonna ride it until they break or won't stay true. Then off to a custom wheel builder for a set of Hope Pro IIs and Rhyno Lites.

I put about 10 miles on today on some local trails at a very easy pace and this bike is great - neutral yet agile, more compliance than my current HT, and the fork is *much* better than my old Manitou black.

I can't wait to break it in with a proper ride!

All I have is a crappy $670 IronHorse and the rims were junk within one year. Boy did I put that bike through a ringer. Now with everything ironed out is has been pretty reliable, but I think a better one is not far into the future. I bought the bike because i wasn't sure if I was going to like the off road thing, but I fell in love with it.

I have an old mongoose and I am out of shape. I can only go down hills. :rofl and maybe uphill too. I would love to get back into shape again.

I used to ride hwy 49 between Auburn, Cool, Coloma, and Salmond Falls Rd. when I was younger.

Rockville Park

Had gone on a quick ride today at Rockville :) 7 miles :) The weather was actually pretty nice, the terrain muddy and a little slick. It felt good to be out and sweat abit. I'm thankful that MTB was introduced to me...I absolutely love it! :love

I go up to Vacaville sometimes. Where would Rockville be? Maybe we can get a group ride going. I also have to ask if there are some heavy climbs out there. I just love a good beating.

And it starts. My mtn bikes started much like yours, then "I'll just upgrade the brakes" snowballed into me building it from the frameset up.

The best thing I ever did upgrade was wheels and saddle. Harpo has made good recomendations that I've eventually come around to, even after trying other stuff. That tends to get expensive.

Enjoy the burn, you clyde

As per request... this ones for Linda,

And Sonny and Brian to:laughing

We should plan our next group ride:)

Looks like dry weather for the next week...:ride

Yeppers, I'm getting the bug to go riding big time. Next Sun or Mon for sure.

And I've quit smoking!

Sonny do you have a spare rapid rise rear shifter for 8 speed laying around? (Yeah I know not likely) Or anyone else for that matter? I'm going to set up my 29er as an 8 speed for a while as I've got a brand new XTR derailleur and cassette. Just need the shifter.:ride

anyone on here a decent wheelbuilder or know someone who is, that stocks 264.4 spoke length's specifically? or can cut? i can lacy NP, but blew a few spokes the other day and need someone who is actually decent to go over my wheel and replace/retention it. thanks
