afaik the lower price models use eta movements, the more expensive models are in house. i believe the line is around $10k where you get pan guts. the in house movements are generally regarded as being good, but not as good as others (rolex, omega, etc). they were originally made for the italian navy, so they have roots in being a 'tool watch' and have enjoyed a resurgence as fashion watches. i think they're absolutely stunning, but you're definitely paying more for flash than substance. the other issue is serviceability - you hear horror stories about them taking several months to come back from Guiseppe.

for my $ i'd go metal bracelet and exhibition case. i love the design / finish on their bracelets. if you really wanna go big they do them in titanium. all the size and 1/2 the weight.

Anybody here know anything about Panerai? I'm thinking about one but they have such a vast collection and they all look the same....

I want in-house movement and automatic.

This one really does it for me:

Just pick one then if they all look the same? :p

Jokes aside, they are definitely a "watch persons" brand. My understanding is that they only make a certain amount each year, keeps supply down. Not sure it really matters in the end.

Obviously, pay attention to the dial, bezel, etc obviously. There are a variety of subtle changes in the designs. Couldn't tell you much on the movements, prob some good forums out there to explain the 4000 v 9000 v 2000.

Also, be VERY careful you don't buy a fake one. Due to their simplicity, they are easy to counterfeit. Obviously I know your situation, but not sure if you acquire from dealers generally...

I have a PAM317 and I have little girl wrists. Go try one on and see how yo ulike the shape. The Luminor and Radiomir are very differently shaped.

If you want a dive watch, that's going to be a bit different as well

PAM317 - 8 day reserve, GMT, mono-pusher chrono... but it's a manual wind.

^I'm not a huge fan of Panerais but I love that one. That 8 day reserve meter is so cool. Plus hand wind watches are my favorite.

I also just looked at the price. :wow :laughing

8 days also seems like a really long time for a reserve. My (cheap) Hamilton goes about 40 hours.

Regular autos are 42hr reserves. The in-house stuff is usually longer, especially if it's manual. I had a big pilot that was a 7-day reserve automatic.
