What constitutes an expert? Do you have any examples of this? Personally, I find most modern ICE cars quite user-serviceable. A lot of the software/cables can be purchased or downloaded. Working on these cars isn't all that complicated. You could even buy a totaled Lambo and put it back on the road assuming you have decent technical knowledge and a parts budget.

A couple years ago, Massachusetts voters pushed a referendum on right to repair in their state. In response, instead of simply allowing mechanics and owners to access to data about their own vehicles, they turned off the systems that collected and used the data completely.

They also mention a similar law from Mass from 2012 about not using proprietary ODB ports. previous to that, most manufacturers did, and in order to access the ODB data owners or mechanics would need to have access to not just software but hardware that the car manufacturers controlled.
 
Technically Tesla does offer their service software and manuals to anyone who wants it. If you want access to those things it will cost you $5K a year tho.

Seems to me that'd be worth it for an indy repair shop to specialize in...though I imagine they'd be hampered by Tesla's supply chain issues just like Tesla themselves.

For sake of arguement, let’s go ahead an call me an expert on the matter. So yes and no, they’re extremely complicated, but in the end taking them apart and putting them back together is just following instructions (a whole lot of them), having a whole shitload of expensive tools, and years of experience to know how to use them. So actually not that complicated…to an expert.

That said, here’s what this expert spent the past week working on. I replaced the entire 12 cylinder engine on a new Flying Spur. You drop the whole powertrain on a special table (a $17k table), separate the transmission using the table’s party trick, then crane the engine off. Everyone has a crane right? Then when it’s all back together, a wheel alignment (alignment machine costs $50k), and then use the factory scan tool and a bunch of targets (we’ll call that another $30k) to adjust and calibrate the double radar units for ACC, the night vision camera, and the lane departure camera. Sure…nothing to it! Anyone can do it.

Took me 20+ years of doing this for a living to be trusted with handling a $60k engine replacement and not mess something up. Not a job they give to the green peas who were working a Jiffy Lube a year ago. And to a driveway warrior, this is so god damned complicated, it may as well be a space ship.

Subframe drop and an assembly specific table with transmission slide actually make that look ten times easier than having to do it the 'normal' way.
 
so who has ordered or is in line to order a F150 lightning?

anyone see one irl yet?

and I am not surprised at all some dealers are offering xplan on the lightning (2-3% under invoice) while others are asking 10-25k ADM :laughing

Jim Farley wants to sell Ford EVs online, getting rid of dealer inventory and turning existing dealerships into high-quality service centers.

They prolly saw some big time dealers that do ADM have like 1 lightning order vs small time dealers doing xplan and no adm have orders up the wazoo.

Saw this tidbit....

The first is the distribution model. We think our distribution model today is about $2,000 per unit, more expensive than Tesla. About a third of that is inventory. We have all this inventory sitting around in
dealers, in transit, got to get rid of all that. Public advertising, another third. Spend $500-600 a vehicle
on public advertising. Get rid of all of it.
 
It's kind of funny.

With the recent Troubles, I think it was Ford that was running ads that essentially said "come in and order today", trying to get folks to order a car vs buy one off the lot.

If they can get more "just in time" assembly to make the ordering process easier (i.e. faster, instead of, what, 8-12 weeks), then "Direct" is more viable, and the manufacturers get more control on their inventory.

But also, as we've seen, "Just in time" inventory is only "just in time" when everything is "on time". Stall any portion of the supply chain, and kind of all falls apart leaving nobody happy.

And all that said, mind this is about motorcycle dealerships, dunno how relevant it is to car dealerships, but it's likely similar.

I don't think we should ever expect car mfg to be as fast as fast food, order it and it shows up next week.

Majority ahem all the time the production is loaded up weeks/months ahead, 8-12 weeks is great imo if they can actually hit it
 
EV Hummer over at Dublin Chevy / GMC. It's actually over by the Cadillac show room. It's still BIG! Bumper corners are plastic, guess they figure no one is really going "wheel" this puppy.
