Ford Ranger 4x4 vs Honda Ridgeline 4x4

For 10k in savings, I’m willing to hop on a plane and buy elsewhere.

You won't be able to do that in your situation though, Fred. Ford sent out a memo to their dealers a while ago stating that Raptors cannot be sold to people coming from outside the dealer's locale specifically to stop people like you and Stan (he was trying to do it too) from traveling to places like Mississippi to save $20K on a new Raptor. Town and Country Ford in Alabama was selling them with no markup and I even called to ask and they asked where I was coming from, cited the memo from Ford and said they couldn't sell it to me even if they wanted to. Unfortunately, you're gonna have to pay that markup for the truck you want. :laughing

The new 22 model will sell, I bet.

Looks a lot better, 300+ hp, tech stuff.... looks like every other new truck these days...

Indeed, it's a much better looking truck...but it does resemble the market trends these days too. I'm sure their marketing people figure that can't be all that bad, though. They're just hoping to sell trucks.

Few years ago I looked at getting a replacement Tacoma but they were still gutless and the back headroom could only accommodate midgets.
Checked out the Colorado and they had the crappiest seats of anything I test drove. I didn’t need a truck bad enough to buy either.

It's pretty sad how anemic that V6 is in the Tacoma for how ubiquitous they are. I honestly expected a lot more when I drove one and did a bit of eye-rolling at the salesman trying to convince me of the "power" it had on the test drives. I didn't have the heart to tell him that Toyota needs to ditch the Atkinson cycle crap and just build a V6 like GM did for the Colorado...or just bite the bullet and boost a smaller engine like Ford did. Either way, there's better options out there in terms of performance. I totally understand that a pickup truck is not supposed to be a sports car, but it'd be nice if when you mash the throttle it'd do more than make a lot of noise and struggle to get out of its own way...

Ah...good to know.

Right?! I had no idea about that! :wow

I was 100% onboard with buying a Tacoma until I drove 1. :laughing

Man, gutless is the understatement. Having the pedal floored while trying to reach highway speed and questioning if it would get there before the end of the onramp :laughing

It's bad...

Even Mrs. Yakoo752 was looking at me, asking me with her eyes to speed up :laughing (seriously)

She commented after the test drive how "slow" it felt.

It must not have had the "prerunner" sticker on the side of it.......

:rofl

I suspect their reasoning behind the gutless output is so you can get those 400K trouble free but boring miles they’re known for.

I'd love to see empirical evidence of the "hordes" of modern Tacomas going that kind of distance "trouble free". If we were talking about the 22R and 22RE engines, I'd agree as there's plenty of evidence of that...even though the truck itself barely lasts that long without a lot of sheetmetal work. Otherwise, it's just rumors based on the history of one line of engines.

The whole thing with "resale value" is overinflated too. The only reason Tacoma had that for a long time is because they were the only real player in the mid-size market for a long time. No S10s, Ranger left in 2011, Ridgeline didn't exist for most of that time period and Frontier was using the same truck for over 15 years that basically no one wanted anymore. Of course that's going to inflate the resale value of the only real player in the game. Same reason Wranglers are overpriced...no competition. DCA can control the market any way they want. Of course, that's all going to start changing soon with the Bronco, but how much so remains to be seen.

I'm not buying new, I can buy where ever I want. :laughing

So I got Toyota with that famous, immortal 22R motor.
The legend. Pretty much the automotive equivalent of this...
The neighbor kid bought one last summer based on it's legendary status. It's run for a total of maybe 3 months and it's been parked for at least the last 6 because he doesn't have the money to keep fixing it. I just helped him replace the spark plugs/cap/rotor because he said it was running rough. Had to give him the bad news it's running on 3 cylinders.

The old Ranger seems to have achieved some cult status as well. There's two kinds I see on the road: looks like it rolled out of the junkyard (with ladder rack and bed loaded with tools or landscaping equipment), or looks like it rolled off the showroom floor. The latter gets $15-20k on craigslist.

No technology in the world can account for 200k miles of abuse. There isn't a vehicle out there that can overcome poor maintenance and the eventual failure of ancillary components. 22R may be an engineering marvel. That doesn't make every vehicle packed with one a good buy today.

Dakotas where there. Owned 2. Bought new each time. Compared to my 5.2L and 4.7L Dakotas, the Tacoma is just fine.
You guys missed the ECT button on the Tacoma. It turns the electronic "find the best mileage gear shift points" transmission control off.

Ooo, if a new Ranger comes out, hopefully I can get a 21' model for cheaper next year. Im really looking forward to towing with a new Ranger over my 4cyl 4dr Taco. Ya, I bought the 4cyl to save gas $$. Im not sure it was worth it. 25mph up the two hills between me and the ocean is annoying.

That new Frontier does look nice. But cmon, its a Nissan. I will be a little surprised if it feels as nice as the latest Taco or Ranger.

That honestly looks extremely similar to the Tacoma's interior to me. :dunno

"Beware of imitators to your thrown," from St. Vern's second letter to the Tacomites.

Lot of hair splitting going on. None of these trucks are perfect but they are all damn good. I have a 2008 base model 4-cyl, 5MT Frontier that I bought new. Its slow, gas mileage is adequate and the interior has a lot of plastic. Its been a great truck and done everything I needed it to do but I would probably say the same thing if I had bought a Tacoma or any other brand in this class of truck. This shouldn't be a binary discussion.

C'mon Steve, even the Sideshow thread devolved into a muscle car rivalry discussion.... :laughing

Hadn't followed that thread. I'll grab another wet blanket and head over there.
