Ktm 890r

Interesting, maybe I'll play with the modes, it's just left in track mode wheelie off and slip 2 and I've learned how to tame my wrist for 1st gear wheelies and can almost control the 2nd gear power wheelie on command now.

The tranny is amazing, the linkages actually click and signify a gear change/lever movement - that's amazing after 10+ bikes this is the trickest tranny I've ever ridden!!!

I actually don't like the quick shifter, it's the only weird negative I have, the downshift blips are weird and upshifting in higher speeds the bike has a real delay before getting into next gear. I've had OEM quick shifter and aftermarket ones, the 5th to 6th quick shifter we're all lightning fast, the ktm the entire enertia of the bike stops fora split section and and you can really tell the quickshift is not smooth due to lack of acceleration for that split sec.

Also the bike really needs a steering damper mod, if your mid corner and you hit a bump you can feel the front wash out, the front end is super light imo.

Good observations - I've noticed that the QS really doesn't like being used unless you're hard on the gas or totally off it. But I don't have the delay you're describing - after 2-3, it's so seamless I've double checked that I actually shifted.

As for the damper.... yes, it really does need an adjustable one. It's a hair above useless. Trusting it caused me to crash while cruising with traffic going around 65-70mph, on Hwy 80 between pinole/port costa. Hit a pot hole which induced wobble, which quickly ramped up, out of control, causing me to go down. Did a lot of digging and found that there's some consensus on forums like 790/890 forum that the stock (2.5-5w) oil from the factory is far too thin to be effective - most suggest swapping it out for 15-30w, depending on the type of riding. I plan to put 20w in mine this spring.

Usually people that feel the delay are not actually accelerating when shifting up. Using the QS while casually riding with the throttle in a neutral position will get you weird results. If I am riding with modest throttle, I will use the clutch. Otherwise TWIST and stab.

I dont use the quickshifter all that much, during enthusiastic riding i still use clutch, its much more natural for my brain, I am mainly using quickshifter leisurely, merging onto freeway 3-4-5 all feel fine but 5-6 from 60-70+, you get that big hesitation/delay, so yes throttle input is not that aggressive and just cruising.

ugh the speedo on these things are wildy inaccurate, for realz tho!

Also you can see the hesitation in 5/6, now that i rewatch it, that throttle cant be that lazy at those speeds :ride

and tbh i dont think imma be wot 5th just so i can shift into 6th very often

Are you set to kph, by chance? My 890 is within 2mph of gps through 80mph for me.

I probably have more practice power shifting than most, by necessity. Almost every shift I've made on my Duke has used the QS. I've noticed that you don't need to be WOT for upshifts (although its buttery smooth at WOT) but you do need to be accelerating for it to be smooth. If you're cruising it'll lurch and/or shift poorly. Same is true for downshifts - no need to be off gas but it helps if you're already decelerating. You can also adjust the shift linkage, the arm wasn't at 90 degrees to the shaft on mine, so shifting was initially clunky. My 2020 790 Adventure R reads high by 5% at all speeds. At least it's consistent throughout the speed range. I almost always have my GPS with me when riding it, so I have somewhere else to look for an accurate speed.

My 2008 990 Adv was off by even more. But I was able to "lie" to the controller and told it I had a 19" front tire instead of the actual 21" and then the speed was very close. The odometer was off after that, but I didn't care about that.

I don't think my speedo is in kmh, I'm flying pass traffic already, but 88 speedo indicate feels like 70-75.

I haven't found a way to mount my ram x grip thing to the handlebar so I can see my phone's gps.

I sold my aim too so I need to rig up a phone mount now.

It could be my technique, but

A. This is the best linkage/lever/tranny engagement I've ever felt out of 10+ bikes that I've owned.
B. I've never had a negative reaction with other bikes OEM or aftermarket quickshifters and I'm not riding it any different then any other bikes I've had.

crap i missed your post about the shift linkage till now, im paying more attention now doing 4/5/6 qs with a lot of throttle, it still seems like 33% of time I feel the entire bike surge - it looses momentum just like the vid on the freeway for like .5 second enough where your ballz gently get smooshed and then it accelerates again :rofl, like i had 2 big incidents that I was gonna show the video - then when I pulled the camera I then realized i havent recorded anything in last 7+ days cuz the sd card is full lol

mine looks pretty close to 90 like a 630pm, ill still take it apart this weekend and investigate, thanks for that thread

Yours looks like mine did. I moved it over 1 notch and it oddly made a big difference. I don't have any closeups of before I adjusted it but neither your pic nor mine show it at 90* More like 95*

Also, the transmission is smooth but it still seems to appreciate a nice, firm shift. I've heard great things about the Rottweiler shift saver. It allows you to shift harder while being easier on the tranny.

Thanks for your feedback cg_ops, too bad this bike dedicated forums are so dead. Sounds like imma hafta try 1 spline over and hope for the best.

When is your next track day :ride

https://www.790dukeforum.com/ Has been a huge boon for me and the bike - learned a lot of nuances about it. I highly recommend browsing the 890 section as well as the "Duke Problems, Issues, etc." and "KTM 790-890 Duke Tech Talk, Performance & Mods" sections

As for my next TD, that's a good question. I need to get out there b/c I'm so rusty from the last couple of years. After selling my big trailer to buy a house last month, I haven't been as driven to get out there but... I signed up for AFM as soon as I saw that there's a Lagna day. I was up to 20-30 TD's a year until I stopped working for a TDP. I'll probably do a few races and ~10 TDs this year... I have nothing left to prove to myself, I finally realized that being lower/mid-pack in A-group is very respectable with one arm and a half-functional leg :laughing I haven't looked at Q1/Q2 2022 dates very much yet, what about you? I can always be talked into an event :teeth

I want to try thill west with this bike and Laguna seca and sears, I'll send you a pm when I get some dates lined up!!!

you can barely tell its on there if you sit on the bike and turn the bars lock-to-lock as fast as you can.

Sat on one at the dealer last weekend and flicked the bars from side to side and yep seemed to be doing nothing at all. Totally useless.

Hah I joined ktmforums instead of the 790duke forum, cuz it was like 1 million posts vs like 30k, but your right the 790 dedicated forum has way more traction then the bigger ktmforums with 890 subsection

I found it to be the same - ktmforum is big but seems to skew towards dirt and SD's.

Also, if you haven't, I highly recommend getting frame sliders. The bars aren't long enough to keep the tank from taking a hit if you go down. I went down after hitting a pot hole on i80. I had installed the axle sliders but the frame sliders were arriving while I was on that ride. The axle sliders kept the swingarm, forks, and calipers from touching but I ended up denting the tank, which put the total damage over the threshold to total the bike.

Here's a pic with the Evotech front axle sliders and frame sliders installed. Rear axle sliders were off for easier changing of the tire.

Without the frame sliders, the take plastics scraped on the initial impact, denting the tank (albeit only slightly) underneath the plastics

The rear slider, spool, and passenger peg did a great job of keepin the swingarm from getting damaged

Bonus suggestion - the Cyclops Multi Function indicators (with Evotech fender eliminator) look waaay better than stock on this bike

Gowing down on I80 is a thing nightmares are made of.
Glad to see you still here and posting!

cg_ops, did you total an 890, and get insurance to replace it?

wow, glad your still around! I have some evotech sliders enroute, I bought it from some guy whose racing in fl and then just got sponsored by woodcraft.

What are your thoughts about the aftermarket rearsets, did you have issues locking the heel/boot to the oem exhaust? That is next on the list, also your led are super cool did you have to buy relays or ohms etc? Or were they plug and play.

What are your thoughts about the woodcraft clipon adapters? Lol sorry for the 20 questions.

Here is a pic for attention, some new tanks pads and a unmarked wings exhaust shipped to me in cali from slovenia in 3 days..... absolutely amazing (shipping speeds) - still not as loud as I would want it. :rofl

I've owned my 890 for about 1.5 years now and made some general tweaks.

1) The woodcraft clip-on adapter doesn't give you that much benefit. It does lower to a slightly more aggressive stance but I've taken the 890 duke R to the track and run decent high B times without any issues. Plus the clip-on adapter blocks your general access to adjustments on the front fork. Normally with the default clickers this is not a problem but it becomes more of an issue when you get aftermarket cartridges that have preload adjustments (which I have)

2) Ditto with regards to rearsets. Your mileage may vary but I've dragged knee on thunderhill east perfectly fine without having any issues with the stock rearsets or scraping boots. That said, I know people running A group times without having any issue. IMO, I dont mess with comfort of the rider triangle if I can rail on the bike without dragging stuff.
