Ktm 890r

lonestar, you have a 2020 or 21, curious if KTM is trying to do 2 years or sticking to the 1 warranty year for R models. Haha, i just saw your avatar, you have a 2020, did you have them record this issue while you were in warranty, curious how you got it replaced 2 years later.

Also do you guys think I should not leave the key in the main ignition, does that keep the immobilizer on and trying to communicate all the time to the brain?

This is my only guess, I dont understand why the battery did the low crank and I could not start on Tuesday AM after it was ran for like 2+ hours and sat for like 36 hrs.

My first one was a 2020. It got totaled after a car turned in to me while I was overtaking said car. It had the standard California 1 year warranty.

My second one was ALSO a 2020, but I bought it from an Oregon dealer because there were none left in California at that time. The Oregon dealer offered me a 5 year bumper to bumper (funny, I know), and I jumped on it.

Yes, it cost me an additional $1400, but I have already saved the cost of parts and labor for the full lockset and immobilizer replacement, and no deductible.

I no longer keep my key in the ignition because of suggestions of battery loss due to communication and potential of the immobilizer getting too comfortable with the key always being in such close proximity. I don't know if that's a real thing, but I've changed my strategy because of the potential. :thumbup

i see your bold Lonster lol my bad.

You said they replaced a tail section, i am leaving my key in the rear seat lock while its in the garage, do you think that is far enough away or still maybe causing some electrical confusion from the immobilizer?

Glad your still alive to tell your tale, no buyback for a track duke?

Should key be inside the house if bike is in garage.

Probably far enough away to not be a problem. I keep mine in a cupboard in the garage.

The buy back was over $6500, so I passed. Bent frame, swingarm damage Ti exhaust bent and much more.

I think just not in the ignition.

I leave the key in mine 24/7 - is there an issue I should be aware of? The only issue with the key I've had is bending it. I installed the quadlock phone mount directly over the key. I once was pulling the key out and it was in the way, so, I absentmindedly turned the bars and it caught and bent the key. womp womp

My 890 had a 1 year warranty and I paid for a 5 year extension on it. Already came in handy as I was having some oil seapage out of the valve/head gaskets. They replaced both at no cost, just after the factory expired.

im not sure, i had a low battery crank symptom Tuesday AM after riding it for 2hrs and parking it for 36 hrs or so - that should not happen!

Lonster then posts up he got his entire immobilizer thing warrantied, the front module and some tail module

I speculate that the key in the immobilizer constantly tells the ecu that its a real key and allows it to stay on - ready to go mode or has a constant link that knows the key is real. This is my only guess since that bike should not have any type of charging issues with it being ran for 2 hrs straight and then put away for 36hrs, its not like i left the ignition on the entire time lol

And yes, ive wiped the valve cover gasket clean 3x now, and i keep getting a trickle of oil line leaving the half moon gaskets

Those with low battery problems, I noticed a software glitch exists on my 2020 890 Duke. If you engage the kill switch while you're moving, the headlights remain on even after you come to a full stop and your key is removed from the ignition.

Be wary of this situation ...

Hopefully KTM is aware of this issue and have incorporated it into the new models.

Doubtful..I went in for a minor maintenance issue and KTM had some system flashes and software updates pending for my bike.

I had figured that 1 year in, this would have been resolved. Needless to say, this wasnt even after the flashes were completed

In similar fashion, a significant number of KTM 890 Duke Rs were plagued with countershaft sprocket seal leaks. This was the same problem that plagued the 790 Duke models for the two years prior.

I saw a new 890 that was bought of the lot 7 days ago at Alices and he had the same issue.

KTM ability to make changes is on par with the "Ever Given" running thru the Suez Canal

Also for those statements of how far off the speedometer is on the bike, I took the video and track day Telemetry data from my session and did a new overlay with the actual speed from my 10hz gps vs the speed readout from the OBDII data haul sent by the ECU

Because of a small incremental lag from the OBDII, it's best to reference the speed difference at fixed throttle rather than during acceleration or braking zones

Looks like the bike's speedo is off by about 5-6 mph overall

*cries from 890 reliability, or lack thereof*

*cries from 890 reliability, or lack thereof*

There are 2 items that seem to be prevalent in all these 890 bikes

1) CSS sprocket - it happens so early warranty usually covers it

2) Coolant hoses and clamps are shit and the kink in the one on the left (shifter) side above the exhaust tends to leak when the engine is cold. It drips on the exhaust and you'll smell it. This will set you back 160 bucks in parts from Samco. Mine just started leaking at 6k miles and 1.5 years in.

Overall, it's not UJM level of reliability but it's been ok so far. Better than my Ducati ever was.

We'll see what the future holds.

Yea, had my CSS replaced at around 4k miles. Had the same issue on my 701 as well. Seems like KTM has a lot of issues with CSS's b/c I've noticed a lot of thread about the issue for nearly every bike (but especially the 690 based models)

I was informed at my last seal replacement that KTM has a new seal design out. It was designed specifically to prevent the leakage at the sprocket. It took the dealership 2 months to obtain but once installed, the sprocket has been leak free

I raised the forks to have 5 lines showing

Next ride my quickshifters up does not work, you guys think raising the forks that much fucks with the imu enough where quickshifters up doesn't work? Qs down functions fine still.

The Duke will be going into dealer soon regardless I have a weeping valve cover gasket, and hopefully a quickshifters recalibrate gets if functioning again

Weird if you couldn’t use the quick shifter when you wheelie these bikes because of the imu. Aren’t these bikes designed for hooning.

hA! You had the same issues as me. Warranty replacement of the CSS and valve gasket at just under a year

Ya, I don't think that is right either.
I can Quick Shift while leaning, wheeliing or QS down shift while hard on the brakes.
I seriously doubt that raising the forks a few CM's in the triple clamps has ANY affect on the IMU.

Yea but I tilted the bike forward stance more, not sure if the quikshifter doesn't sense a zero plane for that imu and thinks the bike is constantly nose diving down??

I have no idea how the parameters work with the quickshifters and if even takes imu into consideration for it's parameters, this was the only change.
