A quick drinking report: on Valentine's Day, Ms. BA and I stopped at Snowshoe Brewing Co. in Arnold after a walk thru the woods. I hadn't been there in five years, on the vacation we took the day before my big moto accident. SHe got the flight (7 3-0zers for 9.95) and I got a pint of their IPA ($5).
Their Lodgepole IPA is not my fave, sufficiently bitter but not real distinguishable. I like their Grizzly Brown, it's good for people like me who want a lighter exposure to the brown beer flavors. Their Snow-weizen Wheat is very drinkable, with citrus notes and they even put a lemon garnish in it. Porter OK, somewhere in the middle of the various Porters I've ever had in terms of strength. Their Thompson Pale Ale is stronger in hop flavors than many and is okay. They had a seasonal Winter Ale that had just a touch of the kind of Belgian wang but was pretty good. They do an Apricot Wheat that is pretty good if you like that sort of thing.
On Friday and Saturday nights they do a Snowshoe Prime Rib plate ($20) that is probably the best prime rib i've ever had in a restaurant. A very thick cut, huge portion with choice of taters (baked, garlic mash or chips) and vegs. The steak had a delicious outer coating of flavor rub that was browned perfectly so you got that sensation of having the tender with the roasty. It was so big that I could only eat half and brought it home with me and made a breakfast out of it later.
All told, i think its a good operation, good food and their beers are respectable. A great stop if you are up in that area. Frankly, the restaurants in that area, from Angels Camp to Murphy's and up the hill, are just not that numerous or memorable. If you are up that way, I recommend the extra 20 minutes up the hill to eat and drink there. The biggest rush is when the people come down the hill from skiing, though the snow was just barely there this year (Bear Valley). We actually drove up the hill on Sunday just to see the ski area as I had never been. It was sad, man. Still in the 60s at 6000 feet, then finally down to about 52 right at the resort.
