"Oriental" - is it derogatory?

Right? Almost without exception, there is a right way and a wrong way to do anything. By being tolerant and accepting less from one another, we undermine the value of the species. Always we must strive to evolve, improve and be better than we were the day before.

"Different" != "Less."

Different may or may not be a variable that could equate to less. High levels of sensitivity to trivial ego driven psychological constructs like self identification is a weakness that should be punished regularly.

If a group proclaims that they find a term offensive, who decides whether it's a trivial issue or not? "Nigger" probably occupies a different place on the continuum of offensiveness than "Oriental" does, but where does the line get drawn? For me, if people don't want to be called a certain thing, I'll try to accommodate. It's not that hard.

A lot of subconscious stuff bubbling up here in this thread.

It depends on intent, like Negro or Hispanic (Negro spiritual/damn negro, hispanic pride/dirty hispanics), it can be used either way.

Horse shit. We have gotten where we are as a species by being supportive of one another as much as pushing each other (and ourselves) without exception. I know this may be completely anecdotal and I'll say it anyway. The best coaches/bosses I've ever had knew how to balance support with demands for high performance. I don't think I'd be wrong in suggesting that most people, if they reflect on the best "coaches" they've ever had, would agree.

This.

Sounds like you are hoping for more sheeple and fewer individuals

Oh, I try. There's a lot of putschback though...:|

Being aware of and making reasonable accommodation to others' preferences != weakness. Just politeness. If you're gluten-free and I deliberately serve you a dinner loaded with it because I think you need to get over yourself, that makes me rude. On the other hand, if you come over for a dinner of grilled chicken salad and criticize my 'lack of sensitivity' because I bring bread to the table, that makes you rude. Life's too short, don't be a dick.

The way I look at it, if your wife got offended, then it is offensive to her. No need to ask the internet and go back to your wife and tell her a bunch of white people on a motorcycle forum says it is not offensive. (if that is what you're trying to accomplish)

That's not what I'm trying to accomplish. I'm not trying to win an argument with her. We didn't argue about it to begin with.

I started this thread just to hear other people's opinions.

Aw c'mon. Like the NAACP, it's grandfathered-in non-PC nomenclature.

I'm black and don't consider it derogatory. It could be depending on tone and context but the standalone word does nothing to me. I know I'm not alone on that either.

Well considering 99% of the people who posted in this thread are white, I doubt you're going to get the answers here.:laughing

The fact that you are researching for what seems like justification seems like a jab to your wife's ethnicity.
