PAGING BAD DAD

What are we detracting from?

I've been a mod for one year, it's not like everything suddenly changes because I vote on wether or not someone broke the TOS. Mods are members, I think that gets lost in a lot of people's thinking.

Perhaps I'm the one who should articulate. Apparently my point is unclear.

I like the Mods and for the most part they do a great job. I may disagree with some of them some of the time but for the most part they make reasonable choices. There is going to be no "win" in this discussion IMO because the main point relative to why some get upset is not well articulated.

Like it or not a Moderator is held to a higher standard than a regular member thus they will have a much harder time expressing an opinion or disagreeing with a regular member without stepping over an imaginary line. In my opinion I can only recall 2 or 3 instances where a Mod stepped over that line in my eyes. Given I have been on Barf for 8 or so years that is a damn good record on their part.

As with anything there could always be improvements to Barf, however it is a good resource and a source of entertainment.

Regards,

Troy is an example of the ones who can put down written words much better than I can, which is why it's highly unlikely that you'd see a "fuck you" or "you're an asshole" in a post written by him :)

Bap, yes there may be thousands of registered barf members, however there are only a few hundred truly active users. And, as B4B so keenly observed I don't speak for everyone. However, it's been *MY* observation that many of the more active and vocal users tend to be pretty black and white on this topic.

If may recollection is correct, the number of actual unique members accessing BARF on a weekly (daily?) basis is around 6,000. True, maybe a couple of hundred are really active vocal posters, but even then, a dozen members hardly constitutes an almost unanimous majority of any BARF user group.

One reason why we do not do public opinion polls is because we recognize that they are only indicative of a very small number of BARFers. Rather, we listen (on the boards, through reported posts, PMs, and in meat space), and try to figure out what the membership wants and whether that meshes with what Bud wants.

But if we can get away from this and focus on language. I do understand that there are people who want the ability to use colorful vocabulary in their interactions on the board.

Now, don't get me wrong. I think most of my friends would say I swear like a sailor, but for some reason, I rarely use vulgarity in my writing when I want to be taken seriously.

Keeping in mind that no word is actually banned from BARF usage, I'd be interested to hear some opinions as to why "colorful" language should be allowed.

Just an FYI, on any given day since Jan 1st of this year there are 1500-2500 UNIQUE registered users browsing around on the site.

I can't say I disagree with any of this. Regardless *something* is broken. I can't finger exactly what it is, be it moderation, TOS, current user base or a misalignment of the stars.

Not enough actual riding going on? Yesterday was a beautiful day. I would have thought that might have calmed things down around here. :dunno

To easy. We need a white board, with equations, and formulas, and pocket protectors, and super computers running simulations, and stuff like that to figure this out.

Agreed.

Never reported a post as being "over the line" as it seems we all need to take comments with a large grain of salt.

Of course, I don't believe I've ever "attacked" a member either and don't really recall ever being "attacked" even when starting threads that some disagreed with.

But, I do agree, that some of the folks coming in here just to stir the pot with "you all suck" threads are highly entertaining. :thumbup

I think Megan Fox is kind of trashy looking, but my best friend thinks she is the most amazing, hottest, sexiest living breathing thing on the planet. We disagree on this topic and may never see eye-to-eye. Yet the sun rises in the morning and we remain friends. I didn't even need to say "fuck you" to him to express my opposing point of view.

I cannot argue with you there. Perhaps a poll is in order?

I don't know what the answer is, dude. The world is a twisted, fucked up place. We all want it the way we think it should be.

Sure, but what if someone whom you are not friends with tells you Megan Fox is a fat bitch... and you happen to believe you are dating Megan Fox, what then? People get bent out of shape because they are trying to debate things they believe in. Religion, Politics, Lifestyle Choices i.e. things they associate themselves with. It takes some perspective to swim in the sink and not get angry. Some days I have more perspective than others :laughing

Bad analogy, not everyone on BARF are friends. Sometimes even friends get lippy and need to be told to STFU. I've met people from barf that I can't stand, here or in meatspace. There are also people here who I haven't met, but if I was a GOP senator, I'd have a man crush on them.

Lately I see people lot of people tuning out of barf to go play on facebook...

I must be the last person left behind that doesn't have a myspace or facebook account.
Do I have to quit my job just to keep up?

...its plugging up my facebook, which I use to try and keep up with what my family and old friends are up to.

I'm embarrassed to say but I'm still using email for that.

I’ll turn off the lights when I close the door on this 90's tech.

I agree with you, but I just can't put a finger on what. It's not something foreign to the mod core either as discussions do come up about this type of issue, but it always seems like there's just not a good way to handle it that satisfies everyone's needs.

I'm more towards the anarchy side than the control side, but that's shown to be just as disastrous at times. The truth is, the moderator core struggles with keeping the site as free and open as can be and not letting the garbage get in the way of a quality site. Of course, a site that's largely populated with content manufactured at the instant of thought conception multiplied by the anonymity of the Internet brings about some pretty shitty situations.
We see it all the time. Someone should be allowed to tell someone they're an asshole if they're being an asshole. It's true, it shouldn't be hidden.

On the other hand, telling someone "fuck you" is fighting words and that shit doesn't need to be here. If you wouldn't say it in a starbucks line without being willing to fight about it, then leave it be I say. If you are willing to fight about it, then say it on Facebook...cause fighting over what others say on the net in a forum is petty.

I too wish some of the more colorful personalities and interactions were allowed on BARF at least in the KS. I think we had more honest, and better discussions then...and I made more friends that way. It wasn't the disaster that some remember

You are not alone.

I refuse to join Facebook and such despite those weird emails from friends, family and acquaintances asking me to do so.

I'm on this bandwaggon too. Just watching my woman geek out over that stupid farmville shit makes me want to call comcast and disconnect completely.

Regardless *something* is broken.

I completely disagree, and herein lies the problem ...

There has got to be boundaries. As romantic an idea that anarchy is to the two wheel culture in particular, the reality is, it probably will suck ( as BARF EXTREME proved on a minute level). People left to their own devices will always fuck it up one way or another and burn each other out, as plenty have also proved on BARF time and time again.

I have no problem with the boundaries here but I can see why others do. Is there a compromise? I really don't think so. It is human nature to stretch boundaries. At what point do you really draw a line? I already think that the rules here are already on a sliding scale to give people 1,2,3,4,5,6 chances.

Several people have clearly drawn lines. However, to imply that the "great matter" of the hour in the KS is an indication of BARF's impending doom and non existence is probably benign. There's hundreds , maybe thousands of barfrers in the GENERAL SECTION right now that have no clue what we're talking about or don't care. Yet their experience is still positive.

Because sometimes telling someone to "shut the fuck up" just feels a whole lot better than "we'll have to agree to disagree." :p
