Practical tips for rapture day

Could you please point to some of them?

You fail to miss the point entirely because of the fog of hate you have for religion.

Lets try to put it more simply. Does a persons stated reasons for an action matter if the action has other valid (possibly more) justification?

Lets try an example that does not include religion (but something just as charged). Person A kills person B and says he did it because of person B's race. However at the time he killed person B, person B was committing a homicide on person C. Does person A's reason for killing person B matter?

edit: In the above example it must be noted that there would have been no other way to stop person B other than killing him and person C attests to this fact.

It was answered in the very next post after you asked it, # 21, then #24,( You read them then asked the same question in #28), in # 36 and #37 you were asked to think for yourself; answered in #43, #49, and#50, (you asked again in #72), in #74 I told you I thought it was already answered and in#76 you asked for examples so here we are.

I think what's going on is that you are not satisfied with the overall tone of the answers which is that religion(s) have been one of the most powerful entities to shape the course of mankind ever since someone thought it up, and you want a specific answer from someone how other peoples belief in God has an effect on that someone, right? Ok, I'll try to be specific:

I feel sad that people die and are manipulated because of other peoples belief in God.

I feel sad that people die and are manipulated because of other peoples belief in God.

Me too!

I too fear about what V4 mentioned earlier, the guy that started this May 21st ordeal worked it like most cults do. He not only sold all of his stuff to pay for advertising but convinced others to do so too.

In a way I feel if both athiests and christians keep open communications even if through humor we can work together to preempt any nutcase caused disaster.

I'm hoping the FBI is watching the founder of the May 21st movement for any possible acts of domestic terrorism.

Now back to the humor........

tip: if you're expecting to be taken during the Rapture, make sure you're driving a vehicle with an open top or none at all-sunroof may be a tight fit.

The car weaving and out of control in front of you may be driverless, or it's a typical distracted/drunk/illegal driver in California.

It's funny tho, people here who will advocate violence to support the opinion of a single man or company who openly and blatantly profits from his "cause", but then ridicule people who have a common belief in something unseen, unknown and unprovable-a belief *all* human societies throughout history have shared.

If your god isn't perfect, then why strive for more? Seems the zeitgeist here is to lower beliefs and deities to one's own level.

And people wonder why things get shittier on this rock each day.

this is the big elephant in our national debate. as far as I'm concerned, everyone who believes in the god/jesus/mohamed/sausage creature/ et al, is delusional. and many in our government profess a belief in this nonsense, ergo they are delusional and have no business what so ever making decisions that effect the future of this country and planet. Who is it hurting? every fucking citizen in this country and the world. god is not going to save us, jesus isn't coming, there is no fucking miracle that going to turn it around for us. we are going to either find the solutions, or we are going to cease to exist as a species. and this continuous ignorant chant of; the lord works in mysterious ways, god's will, etc etc. does nothing but exacerbate the already tenuous grip we have on keeping the whole thing from falling off the cliff. because of xtians and their ilk, we have draconian laws against non-violent victimless "crimes", because the "good folk" can't abide prostitution or some kid smoking a joint. And that's just at a small level. Allowing people who think there is some magical, invisible being in the sky that's looking down on us, judging us, making a list and checking it twice, make decisions that in essence direct the future of humanity is fucking absurd. And yet, we have it. How much effect does it have? Just look around, it has plenty. I don't need a god to have a moral conscious, and neither do the rest of the hairless monkeys on this rock. religion does nothing but strangle humanity's ability to relate to reality with clear thought and rational process.

That's my beef as well....My whole family is insane, lives in a pretend world, makes decisions (including who they vote for) based on what they think is truth, when it is all a lie.

Then...excuse the failures...with more pretend, rationalizations, and cover ups.

It's not easy living in an insane society.

I think I see the problem. You consider the question to be answered when in reality it is not because the answer is not complete and/or contradictory.

The problem with your specific answer is that almost always there is another underlying reason for what is imposed on people in the name of religion.

Just because you don't agree with an answer does not mean the question has not been answered. I have gone out of my way to try to help you to no avail, so now I will please ask you to not ask the question again.

What effect does someone belief in religion have on you?:twofinger

I also think you have a specific answer in your head and if the person you ask this to doesn't give you that answer, you feel good about yourself because you can inform them they " fail to miss the point".

I will put it to you this way. Even though I don't care about your point, I tried to give you the best answer to your question and point out other good answers to your question. Here we go- some questions have more than one correct answer.

BTW , It was offensive that you assume I have a " Fog of hate for religion", but I wasn't offended.

The effect is non-zero though, even for the ideal case that the belief does not cause an action, as the system forming the belief (brain, needs body, needs nutrition, creates radiation) interacts with others. Thought takes energy and increases the entropy of the universe.

Only 200 million are supposed to be going, that's barely 3% of the world's population.
Excluding all the other wrong-believers, it could still be a sizable number for the Americas.

Well Shotline, how do you like THEM apples?

Entropy- even after I looked it up, I still don't understand what it means.

If you were not offended, then how can you consider it to be offensive?:confused

For people who are supposedly open minded critical thinkers, you are very close minded and uncritical in your thinking process. We are talking about belief ONLY! Not actions, but belief. If I believe the world is flat, what effect does that have on you? The answer is none. You know the world is not flat and so someones incorrect belief about it has no effect on you. There is no action, only belief which is nothing more than something one accepts as true or real, it is a firmly held opinion or conviction. It has no ability to affect anything other than the believer unless there is action.

The only effect another persons belief can have on you is that which you allow it to have.

One might argue that thought brings order to the randomness of free energy and therefore would in fact reduce the entropy of the universe.:p

I get where you are coming from now, and if we are talking about belief only, then, YES, I will agree with you, it has no effect on me notwithstanding the argument about entropy.

By reading the other folks answers to your question, it appears they didn't get your point either.

Thank you for taking the time to clarify your question.

It may sound preposterous and it may even be absolutely preposterous.......but so what? Many people believe that motorcycles are death traps. Totally preposterous belief, but so what if they believe that? It has no effect on me, I know what I know and what you think you know means nothing to me.

So, if someone says they believe in God, so what? You know what you know so how does what they believe effect you?

"Many people believe that motorcycles are death traps. Totally preposterous belief, but so what if they believe that? It has no effect on me..."

Your head has been in a dark place if you have no knowledge of the past and proposed future legislation to curtail your enjoyment of motorcycling - for your own good, of course. And society's good in general, as motorcyclists are a "well known drag on health care costs."

Yes, but you still ridicule them.

But then I was also speaking to the larger issue of people who don't believe in God commenting on and making fun of those that do.

Seriously, what affect does it have on you other than what you let it?

In the past, the Blue Laws - some are probably still enforced in other states. Right now, religious conservatives trying to - maybe it's already done - remove funding for abortion activities, including consultations, by Planned Parenthood.

And, attempts to stop funding free condom distribution in third world countries as birth control and to fight the AIDS epidemic. Yeah, doesn't affect me directly, but they do breath the same air I do.

Wake up, religion is all around you.

yea i saw that sign about a week ago and was like "uh, thats pretty soon...if these guys are wrong, they are gonna look REALLY stupid, REALLY soon!" :laughing

and if they are right; well my track day is before then, so i'm all good :teeth

1. They're going to look "REALLY stupid, REALLY soon."
2. You can plan your track days as far into the future as you wish.

The idiot has gotten the date wrong at least once before:

"...Christian broadcaster Harold Camping, an 89-year-old former Reformed Church minister who has predicted the end of times at least once before."

This can be turned against you. Where were you on 9/11/01 when a religious fanatic (political fanatic too, but mainly religious in my estimation) killed a bunch of Americans, and tried to kill even more? It was his belief system that drove him to organize the attack.

All action, other than involuntary action such as jerking away from a hot object, is the result of belief.

You appear to enjoy an amazingly constricted appreciation of reality.

I believe I'll have another beer.
