Really Salinas?

Frankly, the use of military vehicles for standard police work, to include SWAT, and the uniforming of beat officers in military fatigues (yes, I know this isn't happening in Salinas at the moment) shifts the police's role away from public servant that serves at the will of the people to enforcer at all cost.

I wholeheartedly agree. My department recent started issuing load bearing vests to patrol cops. I refuse to wear mine despite the fact that I know it reduces the risk of back injury because I feel like a fuckin' goon wearing it. It feels like I'm trying to play commando, and I'm not.

There is a time and a place for military appearance and tactics in police work. The average patrol setting isn't that place. As a SWAT "Operator" I would never complain about the availability of an armored vehicle to use during a callout.

I can understand the need for SWAT.

I've noticed in my years of living in other states how often many police departments have resorted to black fatigues and full vests worn outside the uniform. That and baseball caps. Totally my opinion, but it's the wrong look for a police officer and in some cases is borderline unprofessional in appearance.

With all the political bullshit and media yapping about "police brutality" when some gang banger gets shot, why even bother with whole militarization. Can't use it, then why have it?

Supposedly there's some departments that are using them specifically for disaster response.

CoCoSO went to all black tactical uniforms for all divisions recently.:|

Looks like they just went with a black version of their tans. Doesn't look tactical. :dunno

recently some lawyers have used the tactic of saying criminals run from cops who wear black because they don't think they are cops :rolleyes

This. And all the SWAT guys I've talked to really are looking forward to utilizing these vehicles.

As I tried to state earlier, the time and place for that military appearance and tactics is on that call out where some knucklehead has decided to use deadly force. And in that situation even the most staunch citizen against the use of these MRAPs will be very happy to see one coming to their rescue.:thumbup

CoCo used to have a rural patrol unit that wore khaki shirts, a Stetson and 501's.:afm199

Close enough. :laughing
