Really Salinas?

When you're taking rounds from a 7.62 it doesn't really matter if it's full auto or semi auto, your crown vic won't care either

They should charge for ride alongs, then it could pay it's own way, and reduce wasteful government spending.

"This is the AK-47, the preferred weapon of the enemy. It makes a distinct sound when fired, so remember it."

It also makes a really distinct sound when a 7.62 projectile whizzes past your head...

Salinas only paid for part of it. I can bet a good chunk of $$$$$ came from DHS.

Overkill, nahhhh....

They're military surplus. Law enforcement agencies get these things for FREE after the military is done with them.

Our neighboring jurisdiction got an MRAP (I believe it's a MaxxPro like the one pictured in the OP) for $0.00. The only cost is repainting and maintenance. For agencies that can't afford armored transport vehicles like a Bearcat for their SWAT teams, this is an affordable alternative.

Are they available for pennies on the dollar from the military or full retail private companies?

They're not really free.

We're paying to ship these things back from overseas. Don't forget that part.

They may be "free" to the department, but the cost to the US taxpayer to build them in the first place, ship them overseas, and then back, is non-trivial.

I suppose I can see one of those things as an intimidation device, but if TSHTF in a big way, i can't seem them being very useful.

Didn't you guys see what happened to that one APC in the Ukraine? Molotov cocktails are a bitch, and don't need direct line of sight for a hit.

And if the gangs are as bad as people allege, what makes anyone think they don't have evil military gear like RPGs? :laughing

Semantics....

Nothing is "free."

The military pisses away so much money that shipping a few armored vehicles around is a drop in the ocean

And there is still cost in maintenance and dick-size factor. Just as every city now has to have an armored vehicle, soon every small to mi-size city will need two or three or... and before you know it, those soon-to-surplus A-10s will have "Protect and Serve" badges on the sides. :laughing

:hand

LAPD already has one...

Only, upfront. Who's fixing the flats, changing the batteries, etc ? That's beyond a regular M&R departments scope.

Regarding the North Hollywood scenario;
The shootout lasted 45 minutes.
LAPDs MRAP if near Main st. is 45 minutes away.

So you're proposing more of them? One in every precinct station? I like it! :thumbup:laughing

They'll cost a lot more to operate than that. Biggest expense will be all the new training they'll add.
