Really Salinas?

They'll cost a lot more to operate than that. Biggest expense will be all the new training they'll add.

Cost of training plus the salary adder the union will put in once you get the training in the bargaining agreement :thumbup

There's plenty of pics of Boston PD doing just that. Disagreements on future government spending with you = hate. :laughing

Again. Each scenario is different. There is a time to use the vehicle as cover and there are times where it isn't necessary. If they are in the middle of a downed civilian/hostage rescue, do you think they will be exposing themselves to gunfire by riding on the running boards?

The fact that they have the option to use the vehicle as cover from a gunman is what is important. My department has a bread truck as a SWAT vehicle. It has zero ballistic protection (and we still have to pay for maintenance on it...).

Why not give agencies equipment that they may need some day when the Feds are giving it away for FREE?

This.

If yall aint in a gunfight, ride it how you want. And that sucks yall are riding around in a vehicke with zero protection. Shit, regular cop cars arent even bullet proof huh??

Nope. SWAT Team Members will already likely be getting paid some sort of extra stipend or hazard pay.

I agree, ballistic protection is great. A mine resistant 14 ton turtle though ? I've said enough, time will tell how useful they are. You guys be safe and enjoy them. :thumbup

My opinion is that we as taxpayers should be getting some money back on them by selling them. Seeing as how we're the ones who bought them (for, no doubt, exorbitant prices).

Vs what, rotting away in a retired airfield?

Salinas has some of the most vicious gang warfare in CA.

I remember when Salinas was primarily agricultural and Spreckels still had a working sugar plant. Those days are gone. The surrounding areas are highly agricultural, but the city is no longer a place to buy western shirts and hay. I won't drive there at night.

I just want to point out that the cracker from Oaklamd won't go to Salinas! :afm199 :laughing Love ya Ernie, now you know why I won't set foot in Oaklamd! :twofinger :laughing

I feel really bad for some of my friends who still live in Salinas - it must be absolutely maddening to watch the place you lived in all your life get taken over and ruined by dirtbags. Same with Oaklamd, Stockton and a bunch of other formerly great cities that are infested with gangs. I'm probably too selfish because I would GTFO pronto - my life is too short to live in a war zone like that and I'm fortunate to have the option to move.

Will Salinas PD really put a dent in crime with a MRAP? Probably not. But at least I feel like those officers are a little safer while they're dealing with some of the worst people in our society.

A fricken bread truck? Wow, how pathetic. Once again, that reminds me why I backed out of the process years ago - communities send out LEO's to literally go to war with gangs but don't equip them properly for the job.

Why would that be necessary? I bet there's tons of countries who would pay good money for them. Only after that option has been exhausted should they be given to LEO's for free.........IMHO.

Yeah, they can use it to crush the living shit out of any protest.

Sorry, I don't follow your logic. Sure, military MRAPs are somewhat of an 'overkill' compared to a BearCat but will we get a quarter million dollars for a used MRAP? I don't think so, they're basically worthless. Assuming we all agree that SWAT teams shouldn't operate out of a fricken BREAD TRUCK (like Nick's department) and there is a need for an armored vehicle, how does it make sense to sell a functional MRAP for chump change (or give it away) and then go out to buy a quarter million dollar BearCat for the SWAT team??

The government is literally giving them away so I would really question the leadership of my local police department if they turned down a free MRAP and spent a quarter million dollars for a BearCat.

Not at my agency...

Just because it was designed as an MRAP doesn't mean it can't be used for other purposes. As a FREE armored personnel carrier and rescue vehicle, I'm sure it will see plenty of use. :thumbup

Well, if you don't already get it, having an armored vehicle certainly wouldn't change anything.

Worthless why? Are you saying that the average 2nd or 3rd world country with a limited budget would rather pay full price for a brand new one?

is that evil black assault vehicle legal in California? Or did they take the door handles off of it?

Did you read the previous link I posted? Apparently those 3rd world countries aren't lining up to buy used MRAPs so the government is unloading them for basically nothing.

Here is another agency that bought a used one with only 7k miles for TWO GRAND!! Most guys I know have more than that wrapped up in their bicycle!! :laughing
