Refueling while seated?

Probably been covered, I probably searched for the wrong terms, so here it is again (possibly).

Today I saw a guy stopped at a gas pump trying to fuel up his bike while still seated. For myself I always park, get off, and refuel with the bike on the side stand. So...how does everyone else do it? I guess you can get more gas in if you're sitting on it and holding everything level, but the extra few tenths of a gallon don't seem worth the hassle of balancing a bike and working a pump at the same time. Thoughts?

I do it all the time while seated. I do it so I can tilt the bike and get an even level while filling. IMO isn't that the only way to do it?

I've done it both ways... When I want to squeeze in that final 1/10th, I refuel while sitting on the bike. On a 6+ gallon tank, that extra 1/10th doesn't matter very much.

Despite my tallness, I don't think I have ever filled up while on the bike in all my years.

I almost always pump while on the bike, I just find it easier. It really isn't that much work balancing the bike, just put both feet down. Years ago, I used to get off, before you could pay at the pump, now I can't remember the last time I did.

You guys have no idea how dangerous this is..! What are you going to do if some fuck-tard driver hits you, what if you slip or someone tries to jack you while straddling the bike..? Not to mention the risk of fire..! :thumbdown

I should think that most of y'all would welcome the time to get your butt off the seat and stretch a bit.

This is the main reason I get off my bike to refuel. That and to wipe off my mirrors and visor. Also, there's a real nice laidee who works at my regular station and by paying in cash I get to see her twice each time I fill up. :thumbup

I've filled up over a hundred thousand miles worth of gas, 95% of the time straddling the bike. I find it to be less of a hassle then dismounting first. It's usually only if I'm desperate for a stretch that I'll hop off first, before refueling.

on the bike and only the right hand glove off. just so I can get my wallet out :twofinger but yeah usually leave the bike in gear so that it does not move at all

pretty much ^^^ :)

Obi1ventura :laughing

yojoe!!! so true! :teeth :laughing
(remaining aware of your surroundings at all times?)

what's up Chato? long time man. :D

if you're riding in shorts on a hot day and you refuel while sitting on the bike you can feel the tank get cold against your inner thighs as the gas fills up the tank.
one of those Me Gusto moments

I have to use one hand to hold the nozzle, and the other with a key or other object placed between the boot and the filler neck to allow air to vent out. That's a lot easier if I'm not sitting on the bike.

A "key" to hold up the boot? :wtf Why not just use one of these...

Left hand holds nozzle, right hand lifts the boot.

I get off, I usually rest my tank bag on my seat anyway and it's just habit now. Sitting on the bike doesn't make it any faster.

:rofl same, except the hands are reversed, and i'm on the bike... you some kinda lefty ;)

They can hit me off the bike too, although the chances are slim either way. At least I will be on top of the bike instead of pinned with the bik on top of me. And on the bike I can see behind me in my mirrors as opposed to on foot.

And tries to jack me? Not sure what you mean there, like carjack? I wouldn't see how it would matter if I am on the bike or off it. Someone sticks a gun in my face and says "give me the bike" I am going to give it to them (then kill the engine via my remote :)), whether I am off it or on it. I would think that they might be slightly less likely to try it with someone on the bike.
I never really thought about it till now, but staying on the bike means someone can't just jump on the bike and drive it off. So very very slight benefit there.

Not sure how the risk of fire is increased with being on the bike. And fire at a gas station is very rare, if scary, occurance. At least if I am on the bike, I might be able to drive it away and get away quicker and maybe save my bike.

If I am on a long ride, then sure. Get off and stretch, but unfortunately most of my riding the last few years has been commuting for work, in which case I don't need to stretch, my commute isn't that long. May also depend on what you are riding?

that tube carries mini nuclear bombs!!!! a drop of gas can KILL

Ok, so? I'm well aware of the thermal capabilities of gasoline. I was more referencing his comment about getting jacked or hit while on the bike. If someone is stupid enough to come up to steal my bike with me sitting on it holding a high pressure gasoline dispenser, more power to them. I hope they enjoy their bath. As far as getting hit goes, I guess I don't feel any different than if I was standing right next to the bike fueling it.

And on this well beaten topic, you shouldn't have to get out of your car to refuel if you bring passenger(s). Have them do it. :p

Um dood, you have a VFR, the key's in the gas cap while you're filling up so in either case you have to remove the key and put it in the ignition.

If there's a fire and you're sitting on the bike chances are you're gonna jump off the damn thing letting it hit the ground, not helping the fire or your bike at all.

Riding away on a bike that's on fire isn't an option :laughing
