Nobody has addressed the run off area past AMA 1. Are there any plans to improve things and remove that wad of concrete in Ernie's picture? Or are we just left to motocross if we don't thread the needle? What about adding a section of airfence out there?

agreed.
I can see the ama turn 1 as a new challenge, but I do wonder about two things:
1--does the safety committee accurately represent the majority of the club or is it just the super fast guys? I only know of Ken Hill and I think Dave Stanton that are on it.
2-- if your bike is too fast for a section of track, isnt it up to you to slow down?
this can be continued to all the buttonwillow and wolliwnottub arguments.

heck, lets just have sunday grudge matches and only use the drag strip.

There are more then Ken and myself on the safety comittee. If you were at the banquet Ken did make a speech which basically said anyone in the AFM who wants to be of the part f the safety committee can be on it and to just let Ken know. Guess WHAT? No one called. :(

To date Myself, Ken, Dave Glenn Lisa M and Don Rudolfs are the only ones who have showed up for the meetings. The bottom line here is that you can bitch all you want but, if you choose not to participate then... You can figure out the rest.

I thought T1 was much safer now than it was a few years ago? I know it's still not the safest turn at the track, but what gives? Maybe I'm in the dark here, but after the recent construction is there really a good chance of sliding all the way out there and hitting something hard? Would a gravel trap help? Or do I just have no clue how close that stuff is out there since I'm always looking up towards 2?

The guy that took Ernie out last September actually went up the hill and nailed the piping (2" iron pipe) that I think is used to secure NASCAR banners--he broke his hand some other stuff--it would be bad news hitting that even at lower speeds. The better question is why dont they get rid of it--there has to be better ways to dangle banners.

I personally love the T9 chicane--hopefully I'll feel the same way about the T1 chicane--Good thing I have radiator guard/Screen sounds like its gonna get a work out

Alan your witch hunt has no merit. Do you really think that we would make a change like this and not think it through? Of course we did. If you are anyone else would like to be involved when we are setting up the airfence/runoff we would love to have your valuable input.

The bottom line is that the AMA turn 1 just makes sense. Now lets go race.

Alan you don't need airfence there, there is plenty of runoff. The concrete is not in the way.

Thanks all (including Alex) for taking the time and effort to help sort this out BEFORE someone gets FUBARed--I think 95% of us appreciate it whether we realize it or not--the other 5% just like to bitch for the sake of bitching ---bitches

LOL. When I stood up after the crash and looked up the track, he was sitting on the tires holding his arm. I smiled a really nasty vicious smile. :laughing

I don't think the turn one was well thought out to begin with. That's the problem. AMA had a different turn 11 at the time they made turn 1 chicane. The AFM board (which I was a member of at the time) went up and created a new turn 11, that you use now. And guess what? AMA decided to use the AFM turn 11 instead of theirs. Just because a few AMA reps. make something, doesn't mean it can't be improved on. Unfortunately, no one is trying to improve their T1, they are just telling you to use it.
I've ridden both, and watched people crash in both, and both T10's (including Yates's head firster into T10).
The new versions are not as fun for everyone in the club...BUT...what are better solutions?
Anyone seen the IOM TT lately?
Or, how many pedestrians died walking across the street in SF county?
Heck we should mass produce those inflatable OSHA vests I saw the billboard workers using on TV.
Or maybe...

I remember in 03' following Dave Stanton through there lap after lap. He couldn't keep it on the track. I don't know if he was doing it on purpose or what. All I know is that after he put a hole through my wind screen, smashed my face shield, and ruined my radiator, I decided to back off and settle for defeat. That's not to mention the numerous brusies on my chest and cuts on my neck....However they have a curb there now. It's a great place to blast the dude behind you. Dave you still owe me some parts! On a possitive note, it's fun lofting the front wheel there, and I'd rather crash there than the fast turn one!

Fortuniately the dirt area has been paved now Mark so, that part is definiately better. As for the 93 ZX7RR parts send me a list and I will see if I can find an old Gobert era Muzzy ZX7 on Ebay for you.

And no it was not on purpose as far as you know. :teeth

Thanks Dave, I'll get you that list...and invoices. I want you to know that it took years of therapy and nonpainful erotic massage.
I think the parts were $50, but the therapy is up to 50K and growing!

ha, that's pretty cool, anybody recognize themselves from that trackday?

Ha! That's a Zoom Zoom day. I can see Creech's and My 5th wheels. That was the dragstrip day last year (March?)

Dave, I was not at the banquet, nor have I heard anything about being to particpate in this.
I would be happy to participate, please let me know how to contact Ken.

Can we at least start the smaller classes WITH the turn 1 chicane so the rest of us can watch?!

You'd never get a bigger spectator turn out for 450sb!

I don't understand why eveyone has to equate racing and having fun doing so to unsafe racing conditions. Just because something terrible hasn't happened doesn't mean it won't and just because we choose to race does in no way mean we make a choice to die. You can have both fun and safety when racing and being able to have as much as both as possible without the other paying a marginal percentage of the whole is the best option. If anything it adds more technical challenges to the course that makes for more intense racing in it's self.

Heck, the old Sears was safe enough for the Ninjette's, even the indoor go cart tracks at LeMans are safe for them. :)

Seriously, I liked the old T1, but the speeds are getting so much faster, about the only way the track can open up T1 is to change that bridge to a tunnel and move the hillside even further back. Then move that water supply point to a location off the inside of the track. Who knows they seem to have the cash in hand to make changes, maybe that is something that can work.

As far as T10, I think it was Rocky Torres that had his GSXR launch onto Hwy121. That was crazy.

So using that logic, let's set up the tracks so that they're relatively safe only at Ninja 250 speeds and everybody ...
