Congrats on the promotion. Same agency, not a lateral? I'm old, the only way up after Prop. 13 was sideways. Fire, LEO, etc. moved like chess pieces. Slide over two cities, up one pay grade. Or Foster City, slide one, up two!!

Got the retirement calendar marked? Put bucket list dates on the 'other side' of that date. It can shift like the sand but helps financial planning...personal morale.

YAY for you!!! Knowing that your employee trusts the work you do is valiant praise.
Please be careful,
as always,
Melissa

Woah- well done! Thought I heard a "Tom 2" on the air this week. They going to let you work traffic OT/Grants on the bike?

Major congrats; bummer there isn't more in it monetarily but as it has been a goal of yours, well done.

Bummer about the motos; maybe you can change that policy! :laughing

I've lateraled in the past. But I've been with the same agency for quite a while now. That retirement calendar keeps changing for me as I look at different options. Now that I'll be starting this new role, I'm planning on going at least 2 more years. I can go up to 4 more years before I will max out and stop accruing service credits. So, while I'm already eligible to go at any time, I'm looking at probably a 2-4 year window.

So, monetarily, it's not horrible. Right away I'll be getting a 10% bump in base salary. The problem is that I'm pretty well maxed out in every stipend I can get, and the promotion will mean losing a few of them, which equal 10.5%. The base salary increase will also increase the percentages of the rest of them, so I'll end up with a slight increase the first year, and then an additional 5% next year. Increased base also increases other pay we get, such as holiday in lieu of pay and retention bonus.

So, not huge increases, but it's something.

FWIW Dave, I read almost all your stuff here and I think you are exactly the kind of person who should be in a leadership role in law enforcement. Intelligent, fair, level headed and HONEST!! Please do your best to mold baby LEO’s in your image man. We need good cops like you. Thanks and keep up the good work. :thumbup

Perfect outlook, X, X+2, X+4 and all points in between. Damn good hilltop from which to view next leg of journey, Sgt.

Yup! I told my chief I'd stay at least 2 more years with the promotion. Prior to that I was considering next year. However, nothing is binding, so it's still completely up to me when I pull the trigger, and the chief recognizes that and is in support of that too.

Thanks Mike. I really appreciate that. I have been doing my best at helping to shape new officers for a long time now. I've spent most of my career as a long time Field Training Officer (FTO). If you're not familiar, those are the officers assigned to train new recruits when they complete the academy. While the academies are an essential component, Field Training is the most intensive and stressful part of a new officer's career. Depending on the agency, typically 20-25% or so don't make it through. Leading by example is the best way.

Ditto what he said!

Now I can FINALLY name drop to get out of a ticket!
:laughing

Congratulations!!!!

Thank you, from someone who has met you in person.

I'm going to go from writing 1,000+ tickets a year on the motor, to writing...well, much fewer.

PRO TIP: (This works every time!)

If you're ever stopped the first thing you ask the officer is if they know who you are. Say it with some conviction. "Do you know who I am?!?" If that doesn't work, tell the officer that you know the chief of police.
