Sierra Passes?

Are there good places to camp or does it get crowded on the weekends?

Well, it's an OHV area so there are usually people camped in the campgrounds
(Fish Creek, Troy Meadows, Troy Meadows Overflow) but if you can get off the main paved road and get down some of the dirt roads you should be able to find a nice quiet spot as long as it's not right on a trail. Paloma Meadows is a horse campground so no bike people there. It's usually really quiet.

Thanks, sounds sweet. I don't have a bike at the moment but I do have a 4Runner :D

Re Sherman Pass Road, the Johnsondale Forest Service office (Jerry?) says it's up in the air, could stay closed as late as May. (760) 376-2171.

I probably wouldn't call him till around the 30th -- I bothered him plenty already. Whoever finds out first hand should definitely update the thread.

It's a haul for you guys up north, but the 178 is really nice and bound to be open. Sucks on the weekends, though.

Jerry just said Sherman Pass Rd. "currently closed. If everything goes as planned, we're looking at middle of the month."

I think I hold off on the Sierras till June. It'll be good..

big storm is expected to throw some snow on the ground over 4k feet over the weekend through Tuesday, that'll delay the passes opening a bit

http://www.wunderground.com/US/CA/067.html#SPE

... Sierra snow with valley rain likely Sunday through Tuesday...

.Impacts...
*hazardous travel likely across the mountains with chain controls
and travel delays.
*Locally heavy rain and small hail possible from thunderstorms.

.Forecast confidence...
*medium

.Timing and strength...
*first system: Saturday night through Sunday. A few inches of
snow possible above 4000 ft.
*Second system: Tuesday. This system may bring a shorter but more
intense round of precipitation.

.Weather summary...
*a long period of mostly fair and warm conditions will be coming
to an end this weekend as a series of low pressure systems moves
through northern California. The greatest impact will likely be
to the Sierra... where potentially a foot of snow could fall
along the passes over the course of a few days. Given the long
stretch of warm weather... it is recommended to be prepared for
wintry driving this weekend into early next week.

This old thread is worthy of a bump.

Anyone know about the plowing progress for Ebbetts or Sonora Passes? Any idea of opening dates?

Long way to go for Tioga Pass, according to the latest plowing report.

Glacier Point Road opened Monday. It's a start.

The most up to date info is on the Caltrans, District 10 FB page.

MOVING MOUNTAIN OF SNOW ON EBBETTS PASS/SR-4
Caltrans' District 10 maintenance crews continue to dig out following one of California's wildest winters in decades, and that includes moving snow, debris and other material from Ebbetts Pass/State Route 4 (SR-4) in Alpine County. Here is a video from Monday's work - snow is packed tight against the road.
District 10's maintenance crew also is clearing Sonora Pass/SR-108, and our goal is always to have the mountain passes open by Memorial Day. Monitor Pass/SR-89 is already open, while Tioga Pass/SR-120 is cleared by Yosemite National Park.
Opening these mountain passes each spring involves more than simply shoving aside the snow. After the snow is cleared, plugged drains need to be cleaned and down signs need to be replaced. Fallen trees need to be removed, roadside ditches cleared of vegetation and debris ... and many other tasks are done before the road is deemed safe for the traveling public.

Im working in the area... nothing open yet... meaning, Sonora Pass nor Tioga Pass open...

How about 49? I was considering riding most of it before too long.

Still some 1-way controlled traffic to repair winter damage, but Yuba Pass is good to go. Haven't done it yet myself, but some friends from Reno rode it this past weekend.

Current status here: http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/roadinfo/display.php?page=sr49

Generally, Highway 49 is open all year along its full length. You just have to stop sometimes for 20 minutes due to road work. I've ridden it end to end. It's about 300 miles all the way. You have to pay attention in a few places to make the correct turns to stay on it.

And 49 towards Mariposa is always open. I rode it last week. If you are wiling to ride goaty roads, there is plenty of roads near Mariposa, Coulterville and Groveland in addditon to preist grade and 49

89, monitor pass is open. I'm planning on a 88, 89,395 to Bridgeport for lunch ride this Saturday.

Hwy 70 has some sections with 1-way traffic, but Hwy 32 is open with no restrictions.

Does anyone know conditions on Quincy-LaPorte and Bucks Lake roads?

Quincy-LaPorte still has the gate closed. It sounds like you've ridden it before, so you probably already know that you don't want to be the first guy over that rode after they open it, either.

Last report I heard from Bucks Lake Rd was on 4/2 and it was washed out in at least one spot. Seems like 2 months would be enough time to repair it, but I dunno for sure.
