Skyrim

What before, what now, why the change? :confused

Disclaimer: I've been playing RPG games for a very long time (i.e. decades), going back to pencil and paper D&D. I typically play most RPG games with one of each of the three main archetype classes or some variant thereof: Mage, Rogue, Warrior. Yes, I still have all my dice n shit. :twofinger

Before: Nord Mage. I wanted something unique and atypical. Its been fun so far and I will continue with this character since I've done a lot of work for the Mage College and want to continue to develop this character along those lines. The only thing I'm not crazy about is the fact that a big hairy, bearded Nord in a Mage robe essentially looks like a really buff guy in a tight dress. That may work for some folks, buts its not my cup of tea. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Now (meaning tonight when I get home): Wood Elf or Dark Elf Rogue type. Heavy focus on subtlety and range, with some Mage and sword/dagger work to supplement. Undecided on race, leaning toward Dark Elf given that I'll probably do a bunch of evil stuff as a Rogue. In Oblivion my favorite character was a Rogue/Mage who had Vampirism and was in the Assassin's guild.

Future: Orc warrior - pure melee mayhem. Orcs look nasty and evil, so I'll probably try to be Mr. Nice Guy with the Orc to go against typical convention. Maybe if I started playing characters to their strengths I might advance faster or more easily, but where's the fun in that?

I have a feeling I'm going to spend a lot of time in Skyrim. I might as well sell all my other games at this point. :rofl

Sounds like your main problem was making him buff, beards and robes are fine. Maybe you can edit your character model selections with the developer console rather than replaying those 10 hours...? I don't want to come anywhere near the dev console this time, it stole a lot of the fun in Oblivion, but that seems like a reasonable enough application.

I love this game! Eventhough I've only put in 3 hours so far. This is the first time I've played any of The Elder Scrolls series. I think I've picked a good one to start with.

Uhhh, mini spoiler alert... kinda sorta?!?

Here is MY very first dragon encounter of the game. Used fraps to record it. It's impressive in that i've replayed this level 8-10 times and the dragon has done something, interacted with the NPCS, differently each time.

I just played the opening scene and I gotta say the graphics are butt and the interface is horrific! I hope the plot is better then the game looks as my first impression is butt. Characters are clunky, clipping all over the place, attacking looks like something that is forced rather then a smooth combo. Why bother putting uneven ground in the game if the npc can't even move over it right. They look like they are waiting for a command from a mother ship before actually moving and when they do you can see how poorly they were designed. Honestly, saying this is Fallout with the guns is an insult to Fallout. They couldn't even get the damn bugs outta the character/what you want to look like screen. So far I am very upset about the game but will power through this beginning part in hopes that something shines through.

I just paid 4 dollars for another game and the graphics look EXACTLY the same but that is expected of a 4 dollar game.

as broke as i am at the moment (saving for xmas gifts) im thinking of picking this up. all my friends (even the not so nerdy ones) are telling me its a great game and cant shut up about it. plus im a rpg geek.

download it for free. Save money!

PS - I feel like I am playing an offline MMO and there is a TON of stuff to do but most of it is boring...

Entoptic, it is fine if you don't like it, but please don't just sit here bashing it, and please don't advocate piracy.

For the record, I found the opening scene awkward and the graphics were too busy, but either it got better later or I stopped noticing/caring. As for the quality graphics you are experiencing, consider what settings you have. It is a fairly taxing game, so it takes a lot of machine to run the settings that look nice. Any game will look like a $4 game if you turn the gfx down to zero.

As for clipping and stuff like that- this is a massive, massive rpg. I don't mind if they spent more time on things other than making it look and behave true-to-life. I personally think the true-to-life thing is pretty silly. Many of my favorite games use heavily stylized art, and it has never detracted from the experience for me.

this game sounds pretty badass I have to say. as I will be moving in with my brother and kids shortly(or should I say, we are getting a house together) and my nephew has a 360, Im seriously thinking about a return to games for this

+1 I am not trying to bash it but give my first opinion of it and you are right about the piracy thing.

Just finished all the Mage college quest and got named arch Mage!! And you get some sweet equipment for magic users by the time you finish all the Mage college quest.

BLAH BLAH BLAH

Dunno maybe you're using a really old computer... or maybe the graphic settings are wrong..

I'm playing it on a 3 year old computer and it's awesome.

I just started to get into some of the dwarven ruins... intense shit there...

Can I kill civilians without 100 guards insta-rushing?

Generally no. You might be able to get away with it if you're sneaking undetected, and one-shot them.

This leaves you with two avenues: attack people out on the roads (especially people who don't have names), or save, attack civilian, have a massive brawl/kitefest with the guards, and reload :laughing

You may or may not care, but be wary when knocking off civilians, you can probably wind up breaking quests later down the road that way.

jackpot giggady :laughing

I loved the Fallouts but this is my first Elder Scrolls. So far loving this, too.

I didn't do any research or planning to start. It would have taken my OCD-ass a week to decide how to proceed. So I just went with the gut and picked my normal RPG style which is a stealthy 'little-bit-of-everything' type. Read the race descriptions and went with Khajit (thought about High or Wood Elf, wanted the night vision and claws).

Got to the stones and debated between melee or thief and went thief. Ironically my most used set-up is currently and axe (main) and fire (alt) spell. I kite backwards while spouting flames and when they swing I pause and jump in with 1-2 swings from the axe.

Shooting with the bow from stealth is a blast. POP! still only doing 2x, though but that's 'cause I'm barely past the first dragon encounter. I'm clearing out a nearby keep and saving up for the House so I can unload these fucking dragon bones. Good grief.

So far the crafting looks intense. An order of magnitude more detailed than Fallout 3's. I haven't been getting in to it too much, yet, because I'm waiting to start collecting stuff until I have a house to stash it all.

I refuse to go to gamer sites and find out quests and shit until I've played through blind, at least once. That said, at what level / location is the free house quest that was mentioned? :teeth I can think of better things to do with this 4.5k I have saved up than waste it if there's another way.....
