Skyrim

It looks like you pretty much have to hire a mercenary companion. I'm a feline thief, light-armored, axe-and-shield, and a sabre cat is a tough match up. Now I'm finding shitloads of bandits grouped together, and now necromancers. WTF, the apprentices and novices are jacking me up?

An axe-thief? :laughing I am a bosmer thief-ish build, I switch between sneaking with a bow, dual-wielding a mix of swords and daggers, and single-wielding with a heal spell. When there are a lot of enemies (5+) you have to pick them off one by one. When there are about 3, attack one and knock him off before his buddies get to you. Other than that, if you wind up aggro'ing 3+ just do your best to run around to split them up, and attack when they are separated. Boosting stamina early is useful for that (sprinting). Consider adding a bow to your repertoire, you don't have to be full-on bow+kiting, but it can really help to lead a fight with a few good shots. It also makes it a bit easier to split up a group of enemies.

Later on, I am getting a lot of good use out of oakflesh/stoneflesh/ironflesh and dual swords, plus my 200+ stamina which lets me dual power attack 2x before recharging stamina.

P.S. Don't forget poisons! Also resist fire and resist ice, if mages are taking you down. You're a thief, you're supposed to be big on the potions.

Hey I stumbled upon some Dwemer steampunk robot pieces in an unmarked area. I guess I should keep them.

Some of those dwemer bits can be smelted to make dwemer ingots (for crafting dwarven gear)- mainly, I believe, the struts, plates and a couple whose names have "metal" in them... but the cog/gears and small dwemer scrap metal, just sell. Also, save the dragon bits if you want to make dragon armor later ;)

I always make stealthy characters with ranged attacks. This time I went for something different, a melee thief. Then I stumbled across some Gauntlets of the Archer Who Fucks Shit Up.

Melee only?

How about one shot, one kill on weak opponents.

I always forget to drink potions or eat food or anything, until I'm near death.

Hey is an orcish weapon better than a steel weapon? Can I smith it?

You need the perks to be able to smith weapons that are steel and above. Orc is definitely better than steel.

That's natural, it's very hard to be all-melee with stealth early on. You need to be pretty high level to sneak close enough to get off a melee sneak attack, so about all sneak is good for if you don't have a bow is NOT accidentally aggro'ing a whole group of enemies, or avoiding combat entirely (which is as valid a strategy as any in theory, but you don't level your combat skills that way which screws you later)

I did find in Oblivion that bow-only is a crappy strategy, and not fun late game 'cause you wind up kiting, kiting, kiting. But bow is still fun some of the time, so my compromise is to lead fights with the bow, but switch to melee when they are in range and NO KITING. Most fun that way.

I'm curious, what bonus do these gauntlets have?

P.S. Speaking of melee sneak attacks, the 15x sneak attack with daggers is so much fun... :teeth

Man...now I'm thinking back to when I played Morrowind, and it sounds like much of the skills/abilities/etc are pretty similar. Looking at the character creation videos and stuff for Skyrim, I'd imagine going a similar route to what I did before. Dark elf melee/magic combo, enchant the shit out of all my armor (featherweight rings, spell damage on contact with the melee stuff, healing rings/armor, levitation rings, etc...I maxed out my enchanting and just boosted the shit out of all my armor and weapons.) I never did fuck with bows though due to large damage single shot spells and DOT spells. Fighting multiple enemies the strategy was AOE + DOT spell, then wade in and melee with the 2h dai-katana and rely on the extra spell damage and healing from armor and other magic items to keep me alive :teeth. Course, Morrowind didn't have dragons and mammoths to fight...but that was my character FWIW.

Ended up enchanting a leather bracer and gold ring with +15% Archery each. Running a stolen Elven Bow (Superior), with the x3 Archery damage sneak perk, plus the +40% Archery perk, I'm finally taking down human enemies with 1 sneak shot.

You can get a free companion by doing a couple of quests the Jarl gives you. She's a pretty good fighter-type.

The house chests annoy the hell out of me... It would have been great to see items grouped by type.

I had a funny encounter with some witches. The head witch was hurling some devastating fireballs so I used a scroll of summon storm atronach... after a few zaps from the atronach, the fireballs stop so she ends up trying to melee it. It was a few moments later that I remembered that lightning depletes mana... I had inadvertently picked the perfect witch killer.... :laughing

One thing that's a little funny- I think they got a lot of feedback from the last game regarding enchanted weapons... I remember soul gems being quite rare and precious, and soul traps were equally hard to find. Plus trap weapons would only trap on kill or something like that, and the spell lasted 3 seconds...?

This time, I have soul gems coming out of my ears, I have found a mine FULL of soul gem veins (Geode Vein), I got a soul trap bow within the first hour or three, and I have a soul trap spell that says "If the target dies within 60 seconds..." :laughing

'Course I don't really like enchanted weapons, I get way too OCD about conserving charges and the ones you find or buy from merchants tend to be a level or two behind... i.e. I have a glass bow (25), and you're trying to sell me a hunter's bow (12) with 10 shock damage? No thanx.

Enchant your own items. But yea I tend to feel the same way. I hate micro-managing the soul gems and traps. I'm mainly concerned with enchanting my armor since those don't use charges.

If I do get a couple of soul gems (that's not a grand) I just burn them enchanting some useless items to sell so I can raise my enchanting skills.

god damn it man, bout to go frys and buy this shit.

You don't even have to drive anywhere, get it on Steam :)

I like enchanted apparel, but you can only wear one necklace and one ring, so I am always swapping around gear for different scenarios. Plus at low levels with weak souls the enchantments are so lame I immediately lose all interest :laughing

Shades, it's the perfect game for the unemployed.

Speaking of enchanted items, early in the game I got this Blessed Dagger that temporarily turns away undead up to level 3. I got into this dungeon with a bunch of these fuckers kicking the crap out of me. One stab from the holy shank and they run away like schoolgirls, albeit for a short period of time. The thing was, this dungeon had a hallway of swinging blades. Get on the other side, shank a bitch, then watch the hilarity.

Yeah, I'm too lazy at this point to play with enchanting.

Got this on Friday. Played for about 10 hours, and of course I'm deciding to start all over with a new race and a new focus on skills tonight. Should be fun!

Do the NPC's just stand around or are they doing stuff.

They're patrolling/drinking/eating/walking/running/lying/selling/splitting logs/tanning hides/hunting deer/chasing some imaginary shit/running around playing tag/etc.

It's a pretty organic world.

Yeah, they have some real nice touches. You will occasionally see people get into fights, you can usually hear people talking to other people, and not just about mudcrabs... A great example: the wolves (when they haven't detected you yet) will sometimes hunt rabbits ;)

Sometimes cities and such will seem just a touch empty compared to real life, and you don't generally forget you're in a game, but it's probably the best I've seen yet.
