Stock Thread 2018

The NASDAQ 100 Index Fund in my 401(k) has also performed very well. What is the equivalent of that index fund at Fidelity or Schwab?

Probably QQQ is what you want. It's an ETF with 0.20% expense ratio.

Active fund managers have had a very bad year. Something like 60% or more of them have underperformed the market.

That's why I prefer index funds and ETFs that follow the major stock market indices.

I can deal with that exp ratio! Tanks Rodr!

I will also wait patiently for afm199's feedback :)

I am not aware of a Nasdaq tracking fund from Schwab. They have quite a few, including SPX and many different small, med and large cap variations.

VRX Valeant Pharmaceuticals Inc,

Is it safe to say they're out of the woods?
They may have killed the career of Bill Ackman but I'm ready to dip a toe in the water. I've been watching this one for a long time to see if lawsuits would kill it or if it would rebound. Its rebounding well.

Been watching VRX as well. Not betting any money on them though as it looks really unstable. Anyone elae care to chime in?

Newbie investor question here. Been investing in stocks for the past 5 years and have about 36% gain on my portfolio. Most of my stocks are long term investments except for a few like cannibis stocks. Was wondering if there is a general rule of thumb as to how long to hold or sell certain stocks? Just sold all my GOPRO as I heard the company was downsizing and not doing well and invested into some TCEHY.
Second question is, I know my portfolio is not worth enough to retire by any means but would also like to know if my money would be better well spent on a Large cap mutual fund like GTLOX? Etrade says its under a No Load. What the heck does that mean? Thanks in advance.

No load means there are no front- or back-end sales commissions on the fund, which is good for you.

Morningstar savages VRX and gives them three stars. Mostly declining revenues. More interestingly, Morningstar says their price is way too high for the prospects, and they have no economic moat.

If I had bought and held a single stock. God.

Berkshire Hathaway was a clothing manufacturer in the sixties. Warren Buffett took it over. I could have bought it at $6. Today? The same share would be worth $304,000. Yes. If I had bought 100 shares then, I'd be worth 30,400,000 today. Does that answer your question? Or I could have bought dozens of others and seen them reach heights and then go out of business. Each one is different.

Speaking of load. Who the hell buys loaded funds anymore??

My sister's IRA is in a front-loaded fund, that takes 5.76% out of every deposit she makes. And no, that doesn't mean there's no annual fee......there IS........1.2%, which itself is a ripoff.

Insane how companies prey on the uniformed.

Did you happen to catch how negative the sentiment was when the stock price was less than half what it is now.
Take Morningstar with a grain of salt

Holy shit. Oh yeah Wall Street found a new way to rip off people now that 401k is all the rage. The fees. Specially on those life funds.

Well part of it is because her IRA was set up by a middle-man (Primerica), who needs to get their cut.

You mentioned "life" funds, I assume you mean "target retirement date" funds? There are several that are actually a good deal. There's a Fidelity one available in my employer's 401k, and the annual fee is only 0.6 or 0.7%. And yes I've looked at what's in it, and it's appropriate asset mix that is adjusted each year to become more conservative.

I bought in about 1.5 years ago at 24 dollars. Sold it on Friday to break even. Papa the ceo is going to bring them back though I really believe that. They are in a shit load of debt though

Does anyone here recommend starting an IRA? I have a pension and a 403b I started last year. Would it be wise to start an IRA or should I use extra funds to invest more into ETF's, Mutual funds, and my 403b? I hear diversification is good and since an IRA is an after taxed investment, may be a good idea? What are your suggestions?

You're talking Roth and not Traditional? If you can afford it sure and why not buy the ETF's you like inside the Roth?
