Saw this on instagram today. Looks like Sur Ron is building a fullsize electric dirtbike.

On the Sur Ron website. Looks like they're going to call it Boom Bee? I wish they would find a cooler name for it =/ The google translate calls it a Storm Bee. Looks interesting I'm pretty happy with my Light Bee though.

Terrible name, similar term I've heard used by Southeast Asians for uxo cluster bombs dropped by Americans that would blow up farmers and kids decades later.

They need a name that's more scary sounding. How about Boo! They could call it the Boo Bee!

Saw this on facebooks electric motorcycle news same rider as in the Instagram post. They show that it has ABS on the front. It has motorcycle components, larger battery compared to light bee, and it is using a similar motor to the Light Bee. They said there was a license plate bracket on it also so it could be a dual sport. The battery is mounted horizontal as opposed to the Light Bee where it is vertical. On the website there is a video of it doing some jumps.

More leaked pictures. It's good to see there is a cradle now to protect the motor. That was one of the gripes about the light bee is it didn't have a cradle and the skidplate didn't have anything real solid to press against.

Looks like since the frame is larger they were able to tuck the battery and controller inside the frame.

They even had some specs. 96volts! The Light bee is only 60V.

NEW leaked info about 2 different Sur Ron setups:

Peak Power:16.5KW (72V);21.5KW (96V)
Top Speed (sport mode):90km/h (72V);100km/h(96V)
Top Speed (turbo mode):100km/h(72V);110km/h(96V)
Acceleration(S):2.0(0-50KM)
Acceleration(S):3.3(0-70KM)
Acceleration(S):4.3(0-80KM)
RANGE:72V Version ≥125km(@50km/h)
BATTERY:72V/70Ah;96V48Ah
Tire Size (Road Legal Version):Fr.: 110/80-19;Rr.:140/70-17
Tire Size (MX Version):Fr.: 80/100-21;Rr.:100/90-18

It's probably direct drive, if it's like the Light Bee there is a Primary drive and a secondary but hard to tell from pictures. Also has chain. Luna Cycle recently released a belt drive conversion kit for the Light Bee also if you wanted to go that route, I guess if you ride more on the street that'd be nice.

Ah i assumed direct drive meant hub motor or something else no requiring a drivetrain

More teasers from Sur Ron's official instagram. It looks like they are going with Storm Bee as the name.

I'm pessimistic about it, but it could end up being really cool. My ideal version would be inexpensive, but have a solid frame/motor/battery and then they could cheap out on the rest as long as the suspension and whatnot were compatible with something from Japan, so you could spend like $800 on ebay and have something pretty bitchin.

I love love a YZ/CR/ETC 2 stroke swap conversion kit. Any one wanna kickstarter this with me? lol

I'm just waiting for one of the big japanese companies to produce one even though I figure I'll never buy another japanese bike.

For the Light Bee you can buy higher quality mountain bike components like Ohlins so maybe they might have upgrades. They're constantly putting different components on the Light Bee, like right now Luna Cycle is selling the Black Edition Light Bee's that has a Rockshox fork on it.

For me the Light Bee suspension is good enough, yeah it could it be better but I can roll with it. I'm sure if I got some fancy fox and ohlins suspension you'd feel a big difference though =P But yeah it would be interesting to see how it turns out. If they can keep it under $8k and match or exceed a Zero FX they've got a winner. I mean that's why I bought the Light Bee it's the cheapest electric dirtbike you can get currently and I'm having a blast with it.

As for a Japanese electric dirtbike I believe Honda is coming out with something. Will just have wait and see. Lots of exciting developments in the electric dirtbike world in the works. But I don't wanna pay more than $10k for one you know. If you want to build your own you probably could, maybe source parts from an old Zero bike like what Rich Rebuilds did. The biggest cost in the electric bike is the battery. A spare battery is $1600 for the Light Bee. I would really like one because I plan to race mine but $1600 is quite expensive for a gastank. Maybe I can build one out of lipos haha.

For me, at $8k it needs to come with showa/kyb. Otherwise, sell it for $4999 with Chinese junk and let customers fit a nice used set of twin chambers from eBay for $300.

You can totally build a battery. Head over to Endless Sphere and get lost in battery builds for days. I bought a k-weld and built a couple 4s6p 18650 packs for my little rov, it's pretty straightforward.

Didn't know there were Ohlins shocks or forks for MTBS available.
