The Essential Trials Stickie

Mark sorry I didn't see you out there after the first loop once I realized Francesca was checking I tried to hammer through to finish and help her out. Great seeing everybody and Mark heres a little inspiration.

Hope Francesa is feeling better, having the bike get away from you on downhill is one of the more terrifying experiences IMHO.

No worries, I did a lot better on the third loop. Gotta find a way to calm the jitters :)

I have the Ryan Young DVD and have been filming myself going over undercut logs. When I watch Ryan Young in slowmo and then myself in slowmo, I think I'm not getting on the gas the second time early enough. Meaning he accelerates as soon as his front tire hits the log whereas I seem to wait until it is rebounding off.

What has helped me a lot though, is really trying to jump off the pegs to unweight. It feels really weird right now not having my feet on the pegs when I'm in the air but it definitely helps.

Yeah Mark, if you listen to him in that clip he talks about putting down the power right as the front compresses (zap) rather than after (double blip). That power driving into the log is what helps the rear direction go from forward to upwards.

I was playing around at Carnegie jumping over a 2ft wide, semi sharp cornered run-off rut on a flat area (basically a trench). If I went over low wheelie and gassed it I'd clear it in more of a horizontal path, if I started over in a larger wheelie and really gave it some juice I went on a much more upward trajectory and landed in a wheelie. It was making me think more about that zap vid and what makes the bike go where. Also made some progress on front hops and directional change nose wheelies. There were a couple of spots at Shaad where I missed my line and couldn't do the 180 in the space I had left. If I could've done a front hop with any confidence I could've saved a dab or three..

Mark can you bunny hop the rear wheel on flat ground ? The Beta suspension does everything so much better then my old GasGas, I was doing the Jap Zap in my backyard for about an hour the other day and my son said it was picking up(back wheel) and slapping the log not landing on top but definitely lifting and slapping the log about 3/4 the way up, I was compressing with my weight and gas when the front wheel hit, practice, practice, practice. We're riding out at Nacasio next Sun the invite is out, bring a cold beer for the post ride on Beer rock. I was out there last Sun with Jim, Allison and Dan White it'll be a chance to practice on Cow Pile style rocks.

It was good to see you on Saturday, Sid. Sharp looking Beta you have there. :leghump

Wish I could join you next Sunday, but I'm in LA for work until Saturday night then mothers day with the family on Sunday.

I'm with you Sid, when I watch the gopro video I'm getting a little lift on the back tire but definitely not placing it on TOP of the log as you describe. BUT that is what I love about trials, so much to practice and learn.

I'll be looking for directions for Sunday later this week, Sid. Will bring the fam so we can all do Mother's day while riding.....she wants to practice anyways. Not sure how to get the kids up to beer rock though...

Lunchbox, my wife and I were out there on Saturday with Sid, what were you riding? We were up at the Franciscan/pottery trail split for a while then just above that split at the bottom of the bunny hill climbs doing turns.

Wish you could make it up on Sunday, Mark. We ought to have a good pack of folks out, I need to practice some bigger ups.

Hey elemental,

I was on a DR350 and my buddy was on a YZ250F. How's Drew's old bike doing? I hope you're taking good care of it before you sell it to me super cheap. :teeth

Hey Arron, good to see you two, funny how Drew brought so many people together and hooked us on certain types of riding then just up and disappears. :later Any who, glad to see you out riding around and having fun. Our next Trials event is May 14 & 15 in Marin you should ride up and at least check it out, good people and good fun, since technically you now have a trials bike. :teeth Sat there will be some cool TLR200 out there. Anyway's if you do go drop me a note and I'll keep my eyes peeled and tell you how to get there great roads for a street bike ride or even a DP.

Will do Luke, beer rock is close enough to walk to. Will keep you posted on time when I hear from Jim or Allison.

Right on. I'll see if I can make it. :thumbup

Great practice yesterday, Sid. I needed to spend some time on bigger stuff and those logs were perfect for it. Didn't get a chance to look at Donna's vids yet, will be interesting to see what worked and what didn't, I did get to the point where I could get over that big log from about 1 1/2 bike lengths out, maybe a little less. Funny thing, I'll bet without the secondary log on the back side it would be easier to clear, you could case out and just pivot over. Much scarier to try the first couple of times though I'm sure, that log was just below my hips so about 30"-34" I'm guessing...

Great that all the ladies rode too, Allison and Donna were having a good time together. I can't help but wonder if Francesca had a lighter, modern bike she would be a little more bold. That Reflex is letting her learn turns and such but it is rather heavy so hard to get up in the air. I know my little girls don't want her to ride at all so they can play with her all the time, like her little groupies : )

Everyone is fired up for Cow this weekend, weather and camping should be perfect. I'm trying to contact the Saturday organizer (Matt?) so I can check, Donna may check Sunday and will be riding Saturday for sure. Allison is trying to convince her to ride the 2 line....I'll bet it works...she loves a challenge.

See you there; you too Mark! It was a fun day, you'd have loved it!

Can't wait to I move back to Livermore and will be able to join you guys at Carnegie.

Really looking forward to Cowpile as well. Beautiful location with all the ferns in the woods and just a fun place to ride the trials bike. See you guys out there Sunday for sure!

Great event fellas. Beautiful weather, no one got hurt and the loop had some incredible single track.

I plan on attending the work day and training on 6/4, will probably get there and camp Friday evening. It's always challenging to make the next few events because I'm in San Jose but I want to try as the events really help you identify what you need to work on.

Great seeing you guys and it was nice to have Jim/Allison out there as well.

Yeah it was a great event at Gambonini as usual, nice riding, good people and good terrain. Wish I could've seen some of your rides Mark, you did pretty damn well. You and Matt are leaving the rest of us behind....

We will be up to the work day for sure, likely come up Saturday morning and stay over 'til Sunday. Do you guys think I will have any issues getting my trailer to a good spot up there? Only done it in a truck and some of the roads/sites are a pretty tight fit.

Most of the stuff that hurt my score were not smooth enough throttle in the soft stuff, need to dial that in for sure. Front hops are working ok, I may even try one in an event in the near future just for fun. Have to keep on with the bigger obstacles too, I get intimidated by anything over 30" or so but can actually get over them alright. Turns are going OK but you can always do more on that front.

Fun riding with you all and see you on the 4th if not at a practice before (paging Jim.....)

Awesome event had a blast, love that place even though I'm itching here and there a little, lol. We will definitely see you guys up at the work party and we are staying over night too and hopefully get some rides in before that, JIM !!! Luke you should have no problem getting your trailer in to club property just a little tight if you try to get it in past the parking area, but I've driven my truck with the camper shell on it all the way to the bottom of the property with no problem. I need to not ride but just balance, balance and more balance have not much issues getting over stuff just balancing on top of stuff and stopping and balancing. So my goal is to balance and balance...repeat myself there a bit.

Awesome thread. :applause Great Addition to dirty barf :thumbup

:thumbup Yes in Deeddy Adrian Lewis, of Lewis Sports, located at Copperopolis...
Just returned from Scotland... He competed in the Six Days..

And being from Scotland , he also visited family.

He is a Dealer for Ossa... OMG the new Ossa is trick. :thumbup

OMG the new Ossa is trick

:wow:wtf I guess you don't know that Ossa went banko along with Gasgas last year? They are trick but finding dwindling parts is now the trick....
Adrian rode and place in the SSDT, super cool. He didn't make last week's event but another rider that did it came out, one hell of an enduro that SSDT is.

Sid, you heading up Saturday or Friday? Wonder if I should bring some brush grooming tools....

"New" likely meant 1960s,given the source. It's all relative, whippersnapper! :afm199

I do like the Ossa Explorer. Kinda glad now that I didn't talk myself into buying one.

Luke, we're heading up Sat morning, we a graduation on Fri night. Brush clearing tools like pruners and clippers and small hand saws work great. Looks like Jim is heading off to England for a couple weeks so I guess no riding in Nacasio for a while.
