The Official 2015/2016 NFL Thread

That was a jab at Tomsula. They were allegedly not even on speaking terms when Harbaugh was let go, because Tomsula had been playing office politics and angling for the HC job before it was even available.

Tomsula earned $14M to suck at his job and get fired. What a country.

I don't want Mangini back. His defenses were like Swiss cheese. And that's being nice about it. Payton is my first choice with Jackson a close second.

You think a control freak like Payton is worth trading a top 40 draft pick from a team that chased Harbaugh out of town? I just have a hard time seeing him work with York and Baalke. I think Jackson is a better fit for the franchise.

Baalke and Payton know each other from working with Parcells

I think it would go a long way to support Jeddy-bear's apology if he picked another great coach regardless of how he perceives their relationship developing. They don't need to like each other. They just need to coexist. I'm of the opinion that, after weighing the past 10 years, above all else, Jeddy-bear would rather have a winning team than a losing one. Finding a way to make it work with a good coach is part of the equation he needs to tally. Hiring a coach with the track record of Payton would be a tremendous addition balancing the talk/walk equation for the FO. For a fan like me it would go a long way in bringing back my interest to the team.

The distancing from Baalke makes me think he's been put on notice as well. His influence on the team may be waning a bit allowing room for a strong personality to lead the team from the HC position.

I wish I could believe this, I understand the sentiment. I look at all the people in consideration by the media, and I am intrigued by Josh McDaniel. Yes, I would hope some of his experience with the Pats organization would come with him. I think one of Jed's problems is that he wants to be like Uncle Eddie, but he just isn't the same person.

Payton announced he's staying in New Orleans.

The newest frontrunners for the SF job are Hue Jackson and Chip Kelly.

I'd would have ran the niners into the ground for half that pay.

No no, Tomsula is a genius for however he got such a good contract. He never had a chance, the plane had already crashed before he reached the cockpit to get behind the stick.

I'm kinda on the fence with both of these guys. I like Jackson and think he has better potential. Correct me if I'm wrong, but he didn't show a strong outward personality when he was with the Raiders. I do think the 49ers FO needs a strong HC to guide the team. On the other hand Kelly's personality may be too overbearing. And as flashy as his offensive scheme is I don't like it. It grinds the players down too much in my opinion. The offensive tempo grinds the offensive players and the amount of time on the field grinds the defensive players. By playoff time the entire team is just worn out.

Given the choice, I'd much rather have Jackson than Kelly.

Too many rumors about Kelly alienating players in Philly.

Jackson got a raw deal in Oakland IMO.

don't know if it was a raw deal. they hired a new GM, and the GM wanted his mark on the team. Hugh had Carson Palmer and lost the game they needed to make it into the playoffs, then Hugh blamed it all on the players. It was bad form, and regardless of his accuracy, I would understand any new GM would want to distance himself from that.

I'll give a lot credit to Jackson, and I think even Mckenzie said he should have kept him when he came in, but Jackson kinda messed up when he took advantage of Al's death and the ensuing power vacuum at the Raiders top in the deal he made to get Carson Palmer out of retirement... he gave too much for too long in a 1st round pick and then the following year, a 2nd round pick.

"I know a lot of people think we've mortgaged the future of the organization," Jackson said. "I don't see it that way. I mean, I don't think you ever mortgage the future of an organization when you're putting a real big-time franchise quarterback on your team."

It may have worked out better if he stayed, but that on top of Al's crappy picks was crippling to a rebuilding franchise.

wow, that's it? a 1st and a 2nd? I remember the trade as being, like, two 1's and two 2's, or something like the RGIII trade.

if Oakland had just given Palmer some time to knock the rust off they'd have gotten a pretty sweet deal. look at his performance in AZ.

AZ also has an offensive line and a strong defense...that really really helps :laughing

Yeah he did give up too much for Palmer, but he was in the process of trying to save his job.

Raiders didn't have any more #1 picks to throw away at the time, they'd wasted it already on Richard Seymour. :p

Not sure what you're saying here. The Cards have a top flight offense and Palmer is running it. Their offense and passing game are on par with the likes of NE and Pitt. Palmer is playing this season like a true franchise QB. He could have done the same for the Raiders if they'd kept him.
