Does "freedom of speech" have any limitations on barf ? I dunno, but I think that would be a better topic of discussion, rather than " I should be able to say whatever I want when somebody says something offensive to me"

If someone cannot be disabused of the notion that blacks are inherently inferior to white men, then that person is allowed to freely state their opinion that blacks should be subjugated for the betterment of society. Any pushback beyond a mild "that sounds racist but I'm not calling you racist for saying that" is grounds for a stern talking to.

This is why I did not join PolSink 1.0. There are some here that hear a "rule" and then think of the extremes of why it should not apply. Of course there are exceptions. I think we all agree that bigotry, racism, etc is not "tolerated" in normal society. But I am pretty sure what is trying to be communicated here from Budman and the Mods is that there is a line that should not be crossed (IMHO, this "bar" has been set very low). Again, of course there are exceptions, but name calling for the sake of name calling is not one of them.

There was a time (quite a while ago) where I got a 7 day suspension for calling another member an Asshole (my statement was..."you sir are an asshole"). It was directed to someone that made a comment on a picture in a thread where someone was trying to find a missing child (the a-hole said something about the teeth of the child). Budman (when he returned from a vacation (about 2 days after my suspension started)) overturned the suspension because I feel he saw the "why" of my post (he considered it "baiting" from the a-hole). My point is that there are exceptions to rules.

This thread has gotten me thinking and appreciating the social situation of 2 people reading the same book and having different perspectives on the theme.

My buddy and I swapped books. He just gave it back and said he's just not into Sci-fi. I chuckled and said it wasn't sci-fi as much as a study of cliodynamics.

What each individual perceives as the idea or critical piece is what we get exposed to when a designated space, i.e. the pol sink, exists for us to batter ideas around.

Yes, it was mild, and yes the guy was acting like an asshole to you.

It could be argued either way, but in the end the majority of mods decided it was a direct insult.

The mods do the best we can to be consistent but as everybody has seen, we are not perfect. This is why "the gift of consequences" in the NORMAL forum is tiered and has forgiveness. We ride motos, sometimes we act quickly, and no one hates you for it ....as long as you're not constantly being a dick.

Yes it is a fun quote that provokes a little thought, designed to help people avoid that slippery slope, though more of a semantic paradox.

Interestingly, the ToS was enforced in poli just the same and people were rarely placed on timeout, yet it was closed......strange. What's maybe happening is that there are people in higher standing that need to be safe-space'd and have their harmful ideas force-validated, because confronting people with bad ideas is easier for some folks than others. No different than what we see out in the world. It's just the other side of the coin of the criminal coddlers out there.

My extreme scenarios are meant to clarify positions, similar to examples given in 'slippery slope' arguments. They do not signal an intent to violate rules, nor do they call for rules to not be implemented.

Also I'm pretty sure 'extremes' are what got people wound up and slinging barbs in the first place (and there have been some rather extreme views expressed in the poli sink).


All that being said I will do my best to convey my thoughts without being an asshole; and I will accept any consequences of my words or actions.

I think my point is very valid, over the years there were some true artists that intentionally got people banned by baiting them in various ways, and they did it pretty often. Plumber was a master of it, I lost count of the people he got banned while skating on the edge but not over the official line.

I've taken the time to review 8 (5/8/07 thru 10/1/21) of your 10 suspensions. The 2 before May of 07 are more difficult to research / locate due to some troubles with thread links after the move to Xenforo. Not one of those suspension had anything remotely related to comments about your daughter. I suppose you're going to say that it was one of the suspensions I didn't locate (Feb 2006, July 2006), and I suppose that is possible, even then we're talking about 19 years ago. Let go. Let it go.

No one has been banned because they were baited. They were banned because of their response to being baited. Also note that note that not many people have been suspended 10 times.
