Whiskey

What's a good Scotch, BUT cheaper than Macallan 12? :x (Furchees' sake, it's 54 or 45 ..)

( blends possibly included )

(is GlenXXX still on sale?)

> Scott-ches only in this post.

I mean, Macallen 12 is kind of bottom of the barrel for a decent single malt. What is that about $50 now?

I don't really fuck with blended scotch, but Johnny Walker is cheap and reliably tasty.

I can't even drink Mac 12 any more. I find it uninteresting and insipid.

Yeah, to me that is Glen Fiddich 12. Macallen 12, if I am drinking Scotch out at the bars, it is my go to. They usually have it and it isn't a bill for every glass. Usually if I am feeling feisty after my first scotch and a beer or cider, I will switch to a Laphroaig 10, but I don't' recommend that one unless you are SERIOUS. Sip that one and you instantly become part cantankerous old curmudgeon from the highlands.

Laphroaig is a bit too peaty for me. I enjoyed the distillery tour and like a sip every now and then, but I'm happy enough for a pour when I visit my friend Robert's house- he likes the stuff, and that way I get a dram often enough to suit me.

My golly. What was I thinking, going under Macallan 12?!?

So I guess no Cutty Sark, huh. Will take note:thumbup

BTW if anyone has an un-opened bottle of Macallan 12, let me try it.. whether it tastes as insipid ;) as the one I had had opened for a year and decided it had watered itself down

+1, I won't even fuck with Glen Fiddich, I'd rather go low brow and drink Bourbon than Glen Fiddich.

I think most professional tasters would agree that pretty much all Speyside's taste the same or damn close. Glenfiddich isn't really all that much different than The Macallan or even The Balvenie. It comes down to the nuances created by different aging methods and what materials are used in that process. Even how the final product is blended for taste. But at the end of the day, they're all Speyside drams.

Oh I'll pay more and enjoy it but also regret it !

I have a bottle of Balcones cask strength rye at 126 proof. It is super tasty, but for me it needs dilution to enjoy. So when you calculate that the 750ml bottle yields 1250ml of drink, the $55 amortizes nicely!

Blended...
Try "Monkey Shoulder", blended from Speyside single malts - Grant & Sons.
It makes a very good "Rusty Nail" cocktail (Scotch and Drambuie). :thumbup

Or, Buchanan's DeLuxe, 12 year old Highland blends - Buchanan.

Both are about $25-$30 / 750ml

Kelly brought home a bottle of Weller that she happened upon at Safeway. I'm really enjoying the wheated stuff.

Monkey Shoulder is my go-to for blended Scotch.
