Whiskey

I think most professional tasters would agree that pretty much all Speyside's taste the same or damn close. Glenfiddich isn't really all that much different than The Macallan or even The Balvenie. It comes down to the nuances created by different aging methods and what materials are used in that process. Even how the final product is blended for taste. But at the end of the day, they're all Speyside drams.

I do agree most Speysides taste simialr and tend to be a bit muted, but the Glenfiddich just seems to always be worse. Certainly the burn is there and the flavor profile is just less finished.

I'm a Campbeltown man, always have been, but that is rare in a typical bar.

I thought Springbank was rather common in a typical bar that stocked real scotch. :dunno

Nah, not unless it is a, "Scotch," Bar in my experince. Since when you talk Campbelltown, Springbank is really all there is due to Glen Scotia being such a small producer, so they will usually have some just to make sure they are representing all 5 regions, but Springbank younger than 15 isn't particularly impressive.

Usually they have only the 12 which isn't really any better than the Macallan, but more expensive, and if they are fancy, they will also have the 21, which is like $30 a glass and fuck that noise, lol.

I'm excited to try Kilkerran now that they have started producing though, haven't had a shot yet, but high hopes.

Monkey Shoulder is my go-to for blended Scotch.

Blended...
Try "Monkey Shoulder", blended from Speyside single malts - Grant & Sons.
....

Or, Buchanan's DeLuxe, 12 year old Highland blends - Buchanan.
..

thanks

last night I managed to overcome my "do not open!" barrier and opened Bruichladdich 12 / by A.Murray, from my pantry, that I think bought about 1 1/4 years ago... was not disappoint, good Scotch is good . (a little bitey/spicy though, but I think that's the high >% even though I diluted)

yes it's unavailable right now but it was on sale at Co- back then, for MUCh MUCH cheaper, much closer to a typical Mac 12 price.

...those Murray labels..
anyway :dunno

p.s. yeah.. Glenfiddich? Yeah, .. no. When I can buy other liqueurs for the same price and enjoy them more.

$30 a glass is high for you? I thought you lived in the city where a Big Mac combo is like $20 or something... :laughing

Dude, it is absurd how much Fast Food costs here. All the extra taxes and whatnot, it seriously costs like $18 for a fast food meal at Carl's Junior.

Nevertheless, I don't go out and run up a $300 bar tab on drinks just for myself.

What do you get for $18? Is that for like a combo with fries and a drink? That sounds nuts.

I don't know, like a western bacon burger with crisscut fires and a coke? I don't fuck around with fast food that often, but at the times I have in recent history downtown, I was shocked at the price. You may as well be eating real food.

I agree that's ridiculous

Since some of you seem to really have some tasting experience, I have been wanting to post this for a bit. When I was trying to figure out a present for my dad for xmas, I thought I'd find a whiskey that is close to where his GGGrandparents came from (Applegarth Village, Dumfrieshire). I found this whisky, Annandale. I was wondering if any of you have tasted it. It was very pricey and since I wasn't sure he'd really appreciate it or consign it to the dust-covered bottles of other gifts, I didn't bite. But I still wonder. The "story" part of their website is pretty interesting about flavors. Not sure this link will work because there is an age wall at first when you go to site:

Just get the tasting pack, it's a reasonable price.
