Whiskey

I didn't buy any whiskey In december because I know I would be getting some bottles of gift because everyone knows I'm an alcoholic. I got gifted:
WRBP https://www.woodfordreserve.com/whiskey/batch-proof/
2 bottles of johnney walker double black
18 chivas regal
Gold Bar
a huge bottle of Makers Mark
Angels Envy
Elija Craig small batch
and Two Tigers

good haul overall.

Hows that two tigers? I've never heard of that.

Just had the Wee Beastie and its a layered joy from someone who usually avoids peat bombs.

NEEDS MOAR:
...
Big fan of Laphroaig. This is my current favorite that's on the other end of the spectrum (Balvenie)

I certainly don't mind a peated whisky now and then, but I have no idea how you guys manage to drink Laphroaig... :green

The Balvenie 15 is really a lovely dram that is typically very fairly priced.

Depends on which you mean. The Laphroaig 30 is one of the finest, most complex, and delicious bottles I have ever experienced.

The Laphroaig 10 is for when you want to get smashed square in the face with the peat hammer. Typically I turn to Laphroaig after 3-4 other whiskeys, when my taste has numbed a bit and the subtlety of more delicate whiskey is lost on me.

At that point you can turn to the 10 to continue having a remarkable taste experience.

I dunno man...drinking the taste equivalent of a charcoal briquet doesn't strike me as a "remarkable taste experience". :dunno

I'm not generally a peat fan. My friend gave me a bottle of Lagavulin 16 before the pandemic and I didn't care for it much. Must of the stuff I tend to like is from Speyside

I got a 14 year old bottle of Oban for xmas . Color me happy.

Because my son the bartender is visiting, I have been liberally purchasing new boozes that I never tried. I got a bottle of Humboldt Spiced Rum on Sunday. Delicious. I got him a St. George's citrus flavored vodka last month, delicious. I also got him a bottle of Amar Angeleno, which is your amaro style of bitter liqueur that uses citrus from Ventura area. Makes a killer California Negroni.
So we have been having some fun...

Not very good. Tastes very rum like. It's form the same region in India (Goa) that make Paul John, which is very good. This stuff however I would not buy. I think it's something I'll drink when I'm already drunk. It's not exactly offensive or anything like Mekhong, and I might even have enjoyed it some if they just called it something else, something not as sacred to me as whisky. It's like Guacamole is good but if you ordered clam chowder and got guacamole instead it would be weird.

Paul John, Amrut and Rampur are the good Indian whisky that I've had and would buy again.

I visited Scotland in Oct and brought back a 3x200ml set from Aberfeldy. We regularly have the 12yr at my house. Its easily the best reasonably priced Scotch I've found and very friendly to people that "don't drink scotch". And I bought the 18yr for myself last Xmas. So with this set, I get to enjoy the 12, 16, 18, and 21yr back to back. Unfortunately, the 21yr is my favorite :laughing. The 12 and 16 are similar - mildly sweet and buttery - but the 16 is smoother and more flavorful. The 18 and 21yr are less sweet and more peaty than the other two - and the 21 is smoother and more flavorful. Sadly, 200ml won't last me that long and that 21yr bottle is expensive.

I learned in Scotland that Aberfeldy IS Dewar's. The Dewar family started Aberfeldy to produce the base scotch for all Dewar's. Dewar's is my go-to at weddings. Now I know why I like it :laughing. Also, Dewar's 12yr is a lot better than the White Label. The wife likes it more than Aberfeldy 12 (which was the only scotch she'd drink). Make's sense since its prob half Aberfeldy.

A friend gifted me Templeton Rye Oloroso (Sherry Cask finish). It's so smooth its almost flavorless - kinda like a good vodka. I tried it in a Manhattan and was disappointed because I couldn't taste it at all. So that'll be reserved for drinking neat.

Generally, I'm a fan of the same. Most of my Scotch is from there too...Balvenie, Glenfiddich, Macallan...

But I also do have a taste for Lagavulin and keep a bottle at home for when I'm feeling it from time to time. To me, the peat is well balanced and not like a charcoal punch in the mouth like I find other peated varieties to be.

I don't know, man. I enjoy an Ardbeg or Talisker now and again, I like Lagavulin a bit more, but the Laphroaig 10 is just a different animal to me. Those other guys have some peat to them, but the Laphro 10 is SMASHED IN THE FACE WITH THE PEAT HAMMER. :laughing

It is kind of like how you have all your good hot sauces you like with nice flavor, but you have your Dave's Insanity Sauce around for that rare occasional moment of, "I want to put some murder in my face hole now."

A different animal indeed... Laphroaig 10 is like a clove cigarette, both exude an 20ft bubble around the person consuming them. Also both stick with a person long after they are done.

I recently acquired a taste for the peaty charm that is Islay whiskey. They work so well with a comfy chair and a good book. Working to build up my collection and see what various distilleries have to offer.
Really digging the bottle of cask strength Ardbeg Uigeadail I picked up. Very strong peat with a little sweetness. Very aggressive to your taste buds, don't follow it up with Glenfiddich, just tastes like water.
Buddy very generously gifted me a bottle of Lagavulin 16 cask strength. Dried fruit (sherry cask?) followed by a deep smoke finish with a little peppery spice. For some reason this bottle did not store well, corked and in the shade the flavors are noticeably muted 6 months after opening.

It's interesting how 1-2 drops of water in either of the above whiskey will totally change the balance of flavors. Really enjoy pouring 2 glasses and drinking them side by side, one with water and one without.

My recent discovery is the Glencairn glass. It's crazy how glass shape can totally change how you smell and taste things.

Side by side - VERY interesting. Will try!

Shape - interesting. Will also try.

Thanks.

The Glencairn glasses I only use for scotch. I prefer Bourbon out of a rocks glass. It feels weird drinking Bourbon out of those pretentious little glasses lol

So one of my vendors brought me a Glenlivet 15 French Oak bottle for Christmas this year and damn is it good. I opened it up this evening to enjoy with a steak and the sherry notes were immediately very strong on the nose. This was surprising since the bottle made no mention of sherry casks being involved in the aging process. Regardless, if you like Highland or Speysides in general, I'd highly recommend it.

This stuff is normally excellent, but this is a "single barrel" selected by Savemore Sam himself and actually a bargain for $80 for 1.75 L..he has a few left..
