Wine Country Ablaze

Hey Scott,

That was me from Cobb. I am on edge so bad that it took all day, lots of tears, and a few arguments but we have a game plan. If the fire comes this way, I will evac out of here, while Peter, my husband, will stay and try to save our house. It kills me, but he is positive that he will not go through this again.

Just pray that the winds will calm down. I will be thinking of you and all other folks in harm's way.

I'm from Cobb originally. Lived there for 20 years until what happened to us a few years ago. I was talking to my father who is currently rebuilding their house up there and he was saying he thinks it's going to burn again supposedly fire is creeping towards the geysers. If the wind kicks up again who knows where it is will go. Be careful. I miss it's so much up there.

Winds just shifted from East to West...

Exactly what we didn't need to happen.

Starting to gust pretty good out there.

I watched a recent structure defense livestream on Periscope from the Canyon fire in Anaheim.

I consider myself smarter and faster than the average bear.

I wouldn't want to do it.
I wouldn't want to do it alone.

Please, please, please do not relent on trying to get Peter to leave with you. I doubt you have 2" hoses with high pressure to reach high up into trees nor will he have 2-3 people to watch the structure while he's focused on spot fires.

The rain of embers and sudden starts of 4-5 spot fires at once is intense and frightening. On the live stream one fire fighter was on a 2" hose blasting 50' up a burning tree while another was blasting away and the structure and the camera man was calling out other fire starts around them - and this was just in the back yard, they had other crews out front.

I hope you and your family and friends remain safe up there as well.

+1 2 wheel bear, please try to get your husband to go, I have read too many stories of loss of life from this exact scenario. I can't imagine rebuilding after another fire but a house is not worth anything if a life is lost saving it.

Denise.
Prayers your way.
Not sure what else to say.

The videos of what people drove through to escape show you don't have much chance with a garden hose. Life is way more important than a house.

What can we do to help prevent the spread of fires in the future? Or was this just a perfect shit storm?

Not sure there is an answer to "totally" prevent future fires like this.

Maybe consider underground electrical supply? Including transformers.
Looks like a cause of at least some of these fires is downed power lines/transformers.
(Which means PG&E is gonna pay fines and we will, ultimately, most likely end up footing some of that bill through increased rates)

A lesson from the three little pigs. Straw, wood, brick.
Houses in high risk or repeat fire areas made entirely of stone or concrete. As fireproofed as possible.
Underground houses. Especially when on a hillside.

Sending strong vibes to those affected.
Save yourselves before your property.
Have a fast and effective exit strategy.

I don't think I've ever been more ready for the rainy season.

All that burned topsoil + destroyed tree root systems = very real possibility of landslides this winter. Especially if we have a wet season as bad as the last. So you may want to readjust that a little. :(

Sonoma State University has closed its dorms. The entire campus has been closed.

Displaced students are urged to reach out to their families. The shutdown starts at 8pm tonight (wed).

I guess school has been closed since Monday and they came home to Folsom for the time being. THanks though!

Evacuations becoming mandatory for Sonoma.

Ashes starting to fall on the square in

I had ash on my motorcycle in Campbell today. Insane! Best wishes to everyone affected by this.
