I don't know what the fuck is wrong with this country that we only have one of those. Can't the air national guard have a fleet of 20 or so? 10 on each coast. Keep a unit trained and on standby during fire season. The military can do more than kill bad guys.

Thats not a 747 but there are several jet in use to fight forest fires. A DC-10 was used to drop fire retardant near my sister's house in Idaho during a big fire a few years ago. There was dramatic video on Facebook of the big jets flying low through canyons around Sun Valley and Ketchum, ID.

Its quite the operation. They set up a temporary plant to mix the retardant at a local airport and do many flights. I'm sure its quite the logistical challenge.

I don't think anybody does a logistical challenge better than the US armed forces. Its time to stop thinking small about this shit. The feds pay for disaster relief anyway. I would rather pay a penny for prevention than an pound for cure.

Not sure there is an answer to "totally" prevent future fires like this.

Maybe consider underground electrical supply? Including transformers.
Looks like a cause of at least some of these fires is downed power lines/transformers.
(Which means PG&E is gonna pay fines and we will, ultimately, most likely end up footing some of that bill through increased rates)

.

Underground transformer vaults are typical in a big city
But running power lines underground for any real distance is not practical due to size of conduits & heat buildup. As the conductors heat up, amount of power available decreases.

Anybody in touch with GB500guy? I think he lives in Napa county and I haven't seen him check in here.

GB500guy lists Vacaville as his location.

That is not true.

Check your fucking sources dumbass. Careless spreading of unconfirmed hearsay shit like that doesn't help.

So my buddy who just got evacuated off fourth street just east of downtown is lying to me?

I'll let him know he can be back home and he is wrong because a guy in SLO said so.

Come on man.

Also got helicopters going back and forth over my house right now.

Can you confirm they are actually going over my house? Are they actually flying? That I'm watching smoke get larger and larger from that direction?

Love you brother but I'm not going to post anything that isn't confirmed and have spent a lot of time disputing bullshit post locally to stop the fear being spread.

The 747 story is complicated. If I recall right, one was built, the FAA wouldn't certify it, the company went bankrupt. A new company bought the remants/rights, rebuilt on a new air-frame and still couldn't get certified. They were flying fighting fires internationally in like Israel and Brazil but the FAA held fast.

Earlier this year the FAA issued a conditional permit and the plane has been used in socal, up in OR/WA and now here.

Mon/Tue it made drops near us. I could have seen it on one of its legs if I had known.

Last two days it has been hitting other norcal fires. Its flying out of McClellan north of Sac.

If you go to http://flightaware.com, create an account (some of its flights aren't shown if you don't have an account; account is free) then search for "N744ST" in the search box. You can sign up to get alerts when it flies or just look at the flight history.

It shows up as Wells Fargo (lease holder) as well as Global Supertanker.

I got a warning from the official source of evacuations. There are mandatory evacuations on the Sonoma Valley floor. In the City of Sonoma RIGHT NOW.

Check yourself, please.
