95 mpg

PG&E rates for EVs are really cheap off -peak: ~$0.04/ kWh.

Worried about jumping up to the next tier rate? You have the option of installing another circuit and meter, so that does not happen.

my point is that buying a new hybrid, or most any new car - is simply not a 'money saving' adventure.

True, spending $35k on a new Chevy Volt will not save you any money. But wouldn't it be cool to ride around like an electric warrior, flipping the bird to the gas pumps? :laughing

I could buy 6 trucks like the one I have and still have a few grand in change for $35k :laughing

Yeah but there's a monthly charge of like $250 to have that 2nd meter. Wouldn't really be worth it unless you had a fleet of EV vehicles.

cant we just all agree that having a hybrid car is gay and that having an electric car is even gayer?

i think we can all agree on that! :rofl

my shitbox civic might be a shitbox, it might be going on 130k miles, it might be a tin can, but gay it is not. :teeth

(i only work 36weeks a year, not 51, but to keep the numbers consistent...btw anyone that works 51 weeks a year is doing it wrong...)

I dunno 'bout u folks, but for $30k, i can handle driving a shitbox civic. fuck the sat nav, heated seats, back up camera, heated mirrors, 20 airbags, etc - i'll take the $30k kthxbi

my point is that buying a new hybrid, or most any new car - is simply not a 'money saving' adventure. period. if you must drive a new car for whatever reason, then yes, there are worse choices out there.

I actually don't have to work at all. I work at my job because it's actually something I enjoy. And I only take a week (if that) of vacation a year.

Now of course coming from a Corvette, there are a lot of economy cars that would save a lot in fuel costs.

Even keeping the Corvette and buying nothing would still be cheaper in the long run than buying a Volt. Or even a new Civic. It'd take fucking forever for the price of a new Civic to exceed the price of fuel savings over just driving the 'Vette.

But, some if us like having a new car every so often. So I am gonna get a new car, I presented my math in buying a Volt versus buying a conventional car to replace my Corvette as a daily driver. And 5.4 years it what it took to justify the extra expense.....coming from a Corvette. Now if I was coming from your Civic, it changes the formula. And it would take longer for the fuel savings to make the Volt more attractive over the Cruze.

And if you're happy with a 15 year old stripper Civic, then more power to you. For me, I gotta have something that's just a little less boring than watching grass grow. Driving a Corvette is neat...but a waste. Driving a Volt is neat, it's quiet, you can go in the carpool lane, the stereo sounds great, it's acceleration from a stop is actually kinda fun, and park in the front row at the Giants game. Your Civic got any of those bases covered?

stereo: check, likely better than 80% of new cars out there
quiet: not so much
acceleration: not horrible, and likely better than you'd think with 115hp and 2200lbs, but its no torque monster like i'm sure the Volt is
Parking: i dont go to sports games :twofinger
carpool lane: nope, dont need it - i gots da reverse commute :twofinger
thrills: come on give the car some credit, its a cheap car so you can mob it! certainly more fun than watching grass grow... but yea i'll admit as far as fun cars go....yeah... the civic doesnt really come to mind.... unless you are like me and think "commuting fun" is trying your best to get 54mpg instead of the usual 52mpg :x but come on, you cant look me straight in the face and tell me that driving a Volt is going to be more fun...

and its 13 years old, not 15 !!! :rofl

oh and i think we forgot to mention the getting laid part: the civic wont do that for ya. tho i dunno how a Volt would do, being its agreed to be so ghey - but chicks like new fancypants stuff, so your chances are likely better with the Volt, than my stripped down civic. good thing i got that base covered already w/ Violet :leghump

I'll look anyone in the face and say a Volt is more fun to operate than a Civic HX. I've driven every kind of Honda there is from the 1st gen Insight to full caged track prepped NSXs.

sure sounds like a fun filled *40* miles !!!!

:rofl :rofl

awe man i crack myself up :rofl

anyone wanna take a bet as to if a fully charged Volt could keep up with my Civic HX for 1 full lap (there and back) on Redwood Road?
15 miles... both ways, thats 30 miles....
my guess is that we'd be calling a tow truck for that Volt, and that my Civic would be faster to boot as on top of that :x

How can you not be a crackup with a name of "speedycorky" and a Honda Civic?

The can named after that mentally deficient actor kid? You have like the champion special olympics of "fast" cars.

You do know that the Volt can actually drive longer than 40 miles right? It's still drives the same when the EV range is depleted. There's just a gasoline engine running that most people can't even tell is on. That's kind of what makes the Volt a big deal is that is has no limitation that a pure EV car (like the Nissan Leaf) has.

Despite living in the Bay Area my whole life, I've never been on Redwood Rd. Peninsula and coastal stuff, sure. I can assume its something like 35 though. Or mayve something tighter like 9. Either way, why the hell would I want to drive the Volt? Those are not roads people commute on. And this whole thread is about the Volt and it's validity as a great commuter car. Right tool for the job. And I've still got a Corvette in my toolbox for roads like Redwood.
