i've been reading this while i was down in LA this weekend for business & to check out the regroom/reseal of the big track at willow springs, and was waiting to see how this shook out ...
my .02 - ironically, the first races i ever placed in were in the rain (yes there were people behind me

) and i'm actually faster on a wet tack than a dry track, which is really weird. i run with 2 clubs that race in the rain, period. but we knew as racers ahead of time that unless there was lightning or ice, we would be running. i've raced on DOT's - never used rains, & did just fine. it's a totally different technique than riding at dry track & honestly i have a blast rain racing. that being said, i knew afm didn't race in the rain - i read the rulebook asked some of the race staff why, and with the kfg's of legend that i know, it makes perfect sense... afm has the one track in california that is not safe -period-to run on when its wet - infineon... and afm runs about 3 rounds per year at it.
i drove down to buttonwillow for the first round. i paid $125 for 3 practice sessions on saturday, watched all my races get moved to sunday, and then sunday 9 am left in the pouring rain because the people i car pooled with had to get back over the pass before it snowed & was closed. was i bummed? sure. but instead of doing that a 2nd time at thunderhill, i got on the horn with all the non afm racers that read this board too and the ofc mgrs for wsmc & wera, got out, pounded the pavement & tried to drum up some business & extra interest for round 5. i also got to spend hours explaining afm's rain policy to reverse some of the confusion barf board discussions can generate.
it was a lot of work, but it's going to pay off, because WERA & WSMC are helping me pump up the next afm round, i had more racers sign up to do the California State Championship - which by the way is the next round - and in short, instead of sweating about it, i'm bringing a herd of fresh bodies to the track for more $$ for the afm. i can't make an august or a september round, but i can convince a bunch of people to attend the remaining ones. i'm out of budget - period, but referring a couple of other racers over gives the afm 3x the money than they would've made off me alone.
(i realize there are probably some people that just read this & went, oh, well the CSC makes money for you too, so it benefits you as well - nope. the CSC is not for profit - i barely cover its operating costs. all the profit from the weekend is race entries and gate, which goes directly to the hosting club and track)
