Any (4-wheel) Overland types in here?

Nice! I love the wide open spaces and sky's the high deserts give!

I also went out this weekend. Although much of my trip was more urban, as I went to Turlock to sell a transmission, and then to Bakersfield to spectate some drag racing.
But on the way back to Oregon, I just had to spend a couple days on the Rubicon!

Matt was out there? Bit far for his territory. What happened to his XJ? I haven’t watched his videos in a while.

That was the "final" test of the Morrvair. If it held up driving to the Rubicon from Southern Utah, made it through the whole trail and held up driving back home, then they'll know that it's complete. It already passed some tricky rock crawling stuff in Moab.
Is that a 4WD Falcon wagon?
1961 Corvair wagon. They used that as the body and built their own frame and everything else on it. You can watch the entire build if you dig through this: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=matt's+off+road+recovery

No, it's a Corvair wagon. They call it the Morrvair. It's pretty sick. They teased the Rubicon trip in their last video.

We took the long way home from Stonyford last weekend and checked out the burned Boggs Forest. It was sad to see one of our old hiking spots mostly burned, but the campgrounds were still nice and about to re-open.

Thanks dude. I used to watch his channel all the time but it got a little repetitive so it hasn't popped up on my feed for a while.

Headed a little bit further east to Black Rock Desert as it had been on the list for a while. This place is something else.

The poor dog didn't know what to make of all this empty space. Not a single bush to pee in. He pretty much held his piss the entire time we were out there.

Explored some of the side roads off the playa too heading north towards Soldier Meadows.

Was getting late in the afternoon so I decided to head back to the playa and set up camp right on the playa instead. Too good an opportunity to miss out on.

The sunset was ridiculous. Pictures can't do it justice.

Spent a lot of time doing this and staring at the sky.

Decided to put out some "don't run me over" lights in case somebody decided to do a speed run in the dark.

Wrapped up camp early the next day and it was already scorching hot at 9AM and I was sweating.
i-dr3VZdZ-XL.jpg

So since the closest neighbor was 638 yards away. Decided to take an open air shower so I was comfy for the long drive home.

Until next time!

Great photos. Thanks for sharing.

Any wind on that playa? First thing I thought of when you said you were setting up camp on it.

A lot less than I expected. Right around sunset it was gusting around 15-20mph. Then it was just a mild breeze for the rest of the night. Made it very pleasant actually.

Have the reopened the shooting range at Boggs?

No, there is no shooting allowed in Boggs for the time being. Half the roads are still closed, and most dead end and no longer loop. It was interesting driving around a formerly familiar area. We used to have a house in Cobb and went there all the time.

Great photo of you and your dog by the fire.

Cool pic's!

How do you like you Pyroad?
Is it worth the cost?
Does it put out much smoke?

I got the Pyroad at their intro cost last year for like $100 and even then I thought it was overpriced but given that I don't have a brake or a laser cutter...

I've only used it twice but I really like it. Main reason I got it is because it folds completely flat so it's easy to find room for it. Most other portable firepits I've seen are usually in box form and bulky or has some other gimmick (charges batteries!) that I don't need.

The Pyroad doesn't put out much smoke at all. It burns super efficiently, and even when the wind turned on me a couple of times I had to move mainly from the heat and not because it got smoky. It radiates out a surprising amount of heat too even with all the shielding.

More importantly it does a great job of not leaving burn scars.

And this is what it looks like all packed up (could use a sturdier bag though).

I’m a frequent visitor of Black Rock. That’s my favorite part of the country. Every time I go there, I find something new. The stories of people who used to homestead there and the places they left behind are incredible.

If anybody is interested in seeing how the Rubicon trip went, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GS6eVDWcUZM

I think the conclusion is that California has some tougher stuff than Moab, Utah has. Or something. Interesting how even that planned trip still had some seat of the pants stuff. :laughing

After 8 days in Moab then hitting the Rubicon. I found the rocks and dust
A bit more slippery than Moab.

Tire recommendation for people venturing off the pavement. Cooper ST Maxx. That’s a screwdriver in the photo. Drove 50 miles, thought it was a rock with the tick tick tick on the pavement.

You guys! I went somewhere! Yes, I actually got out of town for a few days and went plonking around in one of my favorites spots...northwestern Nevada. First time I've camped for reals since September 2020. Now, I'm not a true overlander. I'm in a Jeep with no rooftop tent. I don't even have a snorkel or an outside-mounted shovel :laughing Thought y'all might enjoy a few pictures of the area anyway...

My golden rubi at sunrise...

This place is awesome if you like wide open spaces with no people in them...

These folks have gotten a much fancier sign since the last time I was here...

Only the front of the house has been upgraded with that fancy metal siding. The rear is still original...

There's another old ranch further up but we decided to turn back, passing the 2 old bathrooms on our way...

Out of the draw and up over the rise. This track got a bit interesting around the bend...

We usually see quite a few wild horses up here, but on this day we just saw the one in Wild Horse Pasture and these two...
