So, I've been reading packing.org again..
http://www.packing.org/state/index.jsp/california
I live in Yolo County, which is considered an almost shall-issue county for concealed weapons permits. I'm thinkin' I have a clear record, very little legitimate reason for a ccw, and what's even worse, I turn 21 in April '06. Now, I figure it's still worth a shot, but my age is probably going to be a big deal, when I apply next year, huh?
The process goes like this:
* All applicants must meet the requirements for a weapons permit before a permit will be issued. Prior to receiving the application, the applicant must have completed an 8-hour course from community college or the Yolo Sportsmen’s Safety Course. The applicant must live in Yolo County at least one year. After the applicant has completed the required course, he or she may pick up an application in person at the front counter of the Yolo County Sheriff’s Administration Building.
* Weapons permits are available at the Yolo County Sheriff’s Administration Building, located at 2500 East Gibson Road, Woodland, Ca, on Wednesdays from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., and 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
* When the application is completed and returned to the front counter, the Detective Sergeant will process the application. A background check will be performed and an interview appointment will be set up. At that time the applicant will be fingerprinted via Livescan, and the initial permit fee will be due. Once a response has been received from the Department of Justice, a Records Clerk will telephone you with a time to issue your permits. This appointment will bet set on a Wednesday.
* Initial fees for a weapons permit are $211.64, payable by cash or check.
A renewal of your permit must be made every two (2) years. Renewal fees for an already existing permit are $88.55, payable by cash or check. Contact the main office at (530) 668-5280 for additional information and a permit application.
* If you want to voluntarily register your firearm, this can be done at any law enforcement agency.
That was straight off the sheriff's website.
So, what do you guys think? The whole interview thing is probably their way of sitting down with an applicant to see if they're a fuckhead or a level-headed person. I was thinking I probably shouldn't mention the fact that I come from Bosnia

though they may ask birthplace info.
The best reason I can come up with at the moment as to why I should be a concealed carry permit would be nothing more but the idea of not having to be a victim, of having the option to protect myself and others, etc. but I think that's all weaksauce, they'll probably just turn me away and tell me to call them when I need protecting

Thoughts, opinions?
And for the haters, yes, I can hear it now, if I have no good reason for being issued a ccw, maybe I don't need one

I don't need a lot of things, but I want them

You don't need an AR, but who am I to tell you you can't have it? (the state is another matter)
