So to be clear, do you think going off road as a result of your own error ( or as a calculated risk in corners with run off ) should be treated with a different standard than being helped off the road by another rider in the heat of battle ?

EXACTLY, not to mention... that was a sand trap... Rossi just happened to skip long the surface like a rock skipping along the water.

When a rider exceeds track limits during QP- even for a fraction of a second, the lap time is forfeited.

It's HUGE mistake- to completely run off track- meters off even. Granted- if there was gravel where the riders are cutting like that, most would simply make the corner and not run off. But to do that, they will HAVE to slow down much more than their optimum, non-error race pace to complete the corner(s). Not only that, they avoid the risk of potentially completing the corner on the dirty part of the track where they are much more likely to crash when coming in hot, off line.

This sport is measured in fractions of seconds, so claiming that riders cutting a corner/chicane garner zero advantage is disingenuous, IMO.

And we have a winner. Surprised Kev hadn't said anything about the topic.

My theory:

Vale passes Mav and starts to push. Mav makes the first mistake and runs off track. Vale sees him run off and come back, but this causes the lapse in focus because he though Mav was done.
Mav starts charging and Vale cooks the corner allowing Mav to pass. Riding through the red mist of wanting to fight back, Vale was just a foot off line and a bit too hot.
More importantly nobody was hurt and it was a great race.

Funny that this be the race they wanted to honor Nicky with. Maybe it jinxed Vale because Z00G; the year Vale error'd out giving Nicky the Championship.

They totally need gravel in that chicane. Gravel forces riders to slow and make the turn, guaranteed.

Hey, I thought it was decided (in the off season thread, maybe?) that Zarco was too old to be a factor in MotoGP and that his Moto2 titles were due to lack of competition.

Still thinkin' that?

Rossi had it in the bag until he overshot that one corner at the end allowing MV past. :facepalm

Everything else was to be expected.

at the end of the day, Mav put the fastest lap of the race down on that last lap. all the shoulda-coulda-woulda's kind of get diminished next to that.

Pretty much. They were running record pace for the last 10 laps. Rossi took a defensive line and screwed it up, letting Mav by. At that point, he had 6 corners left... too late to try another pass. I wish he got 2nd instead of no points, but I fucking love that he still has the fire after all these years. The fact that he ran toe to toe with mav for the first time is also awesome for the championship. 13 races left... it's along way to go.

I've been cheering for Rossi all season, but..

... I would LOVE for Dani to win it all. That would be beyond amazing, and well deserved.

He is due for sure. I hope he does.

Seems I am finding more guys to root for these days.

And now with no live booger digging to discuss what will you do?

:rofl:rofl:rofl

Not so fast, swear to god they almost caught him eating a booger AGAIN. Someone will post the .gif and Nick ALMOST said something but deflected it to saying he was just fidgeting. Props to Zarco, love watching him race.

That was the highlight of the weekend for me, I turned the tv off when Rossi went down and I'm a Marquez fan.

I think this was the end of the friendship between Rossi and Vinales although Rossi may put up a front to get in Vinales' head.

Yep! It was great to see Rossi go WinOrBin. The last few seasons, we've seen him fade in the closing laps, and its been tough to watch.

I hope not, since Rossi lost fair and square, AND gifted the podium to Pedrosa (who is riding well, but the podium was a gift)

I think it's debatable that Rossi cutting the corner at Assen should have required him to roll off and concede the race or something of the like.

But perhaps that's not the best example.

What about Rossi cutting the corkscrew v moaner at Laguna? No one forced him off there.

The character of a track is, partly, areas where you can get away with shit.

Austin, for instance, has a shit ton of places you could cut across turns and survive.

A lot of strange falls this weekend.

MM93's race crash was pretty weird and scary.

Some with me cried when Rossi crashed. I wanted to.

I want to be mad but at the end of the day Maverick just murdered that race, and Rossi blew it.

I half thought that maybe he'll just give up and retire, but then I found some hope after seeing some Valencia 2005 footage (RIP Nicky), and thinking of last years troubles.

Maybe this race ends up representing a changing of the guard, or maybe not. Looking forward to a great season ahead either way.

Shout out to Zarco. Unfortunately the crowd seemed too depressed about Rossi to celebrate it much.

So, should they have black-flagged Mav or just assigned a penalty at the end of the race?
