Do you wear a watch?

I used to not wear a watch but I bought the stainless steel Apple Watch and I have to say that I just love it. Very neat and very useful so far.

The watch I have been eyeing lately would be in that category of not-overly-expensive; the Shinola Runwell with the separate second hand sweeper. I like the GMT they have as well - Rambler, I think. Neither are automatics, but Shinola uses Swiss part and builds in-house (in Detroit). A new watch company that can lead with an automatic would be ambitious, to say the least (if they are going to create them in-house). I'd sport anything they make - but a blue dial Runwell would be one sharp watch.

That's a nice looking watch, but I couldn't buy something named Shinola.

Maybe that's because when I was a kid, my friend's dad always said "he don't know shit from shinola"

and now I'm wondering if that's the origin of the phrase.

Edit: nope https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/know_shit_from_Shinola

Etymology
A colloquialism which dates back to the early 1940s in the United States. [1] Shinola was a once-popular brand of shoe polish, which had a color and texture not unlike feces.

You are not far off - they bought the name and the phrase is spot-on. Its two ends of the spectrum - shit on one end and Shinola on the other. One you scrape off the bottom of your shoe and the other you use to polish the top.

The new Shinola company also makes bicycles - not cheap and very well made. I'm trying to convince the wife we should get a pair of Bixby's

I wear a watch as an accessory to my outfit, thats about it. I've been in Israel for almost 2 months and my watch still has the incorrect time, set to california, and not adjusted for daylight savings so its actually not correct at all.

Oh well

the Shi-nola watch appealed to me at first, too, when looking at pictures. It had that austere 'Timex I'm wearing a simple watch' design. The metal lines looked solid.

Nowadays I don't think much about those models, when I know it has the same quartz movement inside as many many other brands (often Swiss ones), while the shinola aren't necessarily cheap.. so I don't think it's a perfect deal.

But buy what you like.

Really want a new dress watch. Not sure which between BM, Maurice, Frederique, etc. have a better fit and finish. I like the way all these look.

What say ye barfers? (not in order of preference)

Out of all of those, the Maurice Lacroix is the choice for me. But I'm not that big a fan of white faces, so it was an easy choice.

Might I suggest this...

Classic, tried and true, simpler face (it's a dress watch so who cares about a chronograph), and checks all the "legit watch" boxes of being a decent brand, automatic, and even a exhibition case back. Though it's probably a bit larger than the Lacroix.

Never heard of their watches, but I liked what I saw on the website.

I never understood the usefulness until I got a smart watch

I'll wait on the next version to bed and pick one up

I'm looking to get a new watch :). Something less than $500. Metal band. face that is not too busy. Seiko seems like a safe choice?
something like the Seiko Kinetic Core

Smartwatches are not for me btw. My wife makes great use of her gear s2. For me the only notifications I really care about are from the mrs, which are not that often.

Seiko kind of screams cheap is the issue. They are great watches though! For $500, there are many others you could consider.

At under $500 you cannot do better than Seiko or Orient. Their styling is hit and miss, though. Kinetics are a great idea, but to my eyes that dial looks like it got hit with the ugly stick.

One thing to consider: at a low price point, watch bracelets are often made of rolled-up sheet metal and they can look pretty cheap. Lots of Seikos are made this way (but the Kinetic in your picture looks like it has an OK bracelet). Anyway, you might want to also consider watches with a band if you are not already doing so.

If I were in your shoes, I'd look at the Seiko Cocktail Time or the Orient Bambino if you want something dressy. If you want something more sporty, check out the Seiko Sumo.

Each to their own. High end Seikos are held to a tighter spec than Swiss COSC-certified chronometers. Seiko isn't even allowed to compete with them in the COSC competitions anymore because they were embarrassing the Swiss.

The Seiko Cocktail Time is very appealing :).

It's a great watch. Looks awesome in person. The dial is stunning.

I got mine for less than $400, and it averages +4 seconds per day. Better than my Nomos.

Best watch I've ever owned :p

More than two years now, still no watch.

I occasionally refer to my phone, but usually take in whatever is available as far as time goes.

(Loved my Seiko, though, 'til it croaked about 15 years ago.)

All of them. :twofinger Except the Vacheron :D
(But really, I just wanted to post something that doesn't say "Oh I don't wear a watch". )

OHIC, you like a black dialed chronograph for a suit watch? :wtf ;)
