Indian Scout FTR1200

Seen this in person a few times. Super rad looking little bike.

I could see getting one next year.

well, I’m seriously considering the Injun against Euro twins:
the R9T, Speed Twin, Monster (wut size?)

this as a replacement for my booming, yet quite worn out Buell -
when I surprisingly selected the M2 over a Monster or SuperHawk
20 yrs ago, none of the 4 listed above existed

one wag here suggested the Africa Twin,
but even on 17s, I dunno

RE 650’s too weak, V-Stroms & Euro 800 parallel-twins too modern
(tho very competent), as are MT7/9s & KZ1k.....

this would be a different kinda purchase

After owning a tube framed Buell for 80k miles, I tried to replace it with several bikes. I finally bought a Uly. When I wore it out, I bought another.

I've definitely enjoyed other hot rod twins, but no one has the touch that Eric does when it comes to the bike as a package. Even then, the XB bikes are noticeably refined compared to my tube framed S3.

testify !!

& hence, my dilemma - either a Uly or XB12Ss, neither a fresh, current moto.....

Looks better in orange but it still doesn't look as good as the Indian.

agreed, it doesn’t -
additionally, it likely doesn’t go/handle/stop as well as the Injun, either

we’ll prolly never know, as any upcoming comparison tests won’t pit the FTR against a rare, out-of-production Hardly - except for we few, who’d care?

1 thing’s for sure - neither moto will ever be directly compared to any Buell,
& that’s wut matters most to me - wut to buy next??

I did a lot of thinking and riding bikes. The Uly is probably the best value and most versatile motorcycle I have ever ridden. The XB12SS and XB12STT are also fun options, but the Uly is substantially more comfortable and versatile. Passenger accommodations, luggage, etc. I also have two sets of wheels so changing over to knobbies is quick and easy. The bike is totally reasonable off road.

Sorry for the completely off the rails comments.

to the contrary, Sir -
you are ‘on the beam’,
aligned exactly with my own experiences & thoughts

has 20 years o’Buelling really spoiled me for anything else....?

I can't speak to the FTR, but if the Scout is any indication, then you're not going to love it.
Every new Indian I have ridden has certainly been good quality, with good component choices. They've all had well designed, smooth, and powerful engines. There's been a common theme, though. They're all quite refined. The Scout's "little" twin is a damn fine engine. It's very smooth and easy to ride. It's fast, too

It's just not violent.

I'm hopeful that the FTR has some of the violence and character that a highly tuned HD does, but I don't know if that's even possible anymore. Modern noise and emissions requirements dictate that parts can't rattle at certain harmonics, and camshaft profiles can't have high levels of overlap. We now have some of the best internal combustion engines ever created.

None of them have the same feeling as a high compression small block with a high lift and duration camshaft.

This is a good thing for the planet, it's a good thing for us as riders, it's a good thing for the people we ride around. The bikes are faster in every objective way. They're just not as visceral.
A great representation of this is KTM's 1290 Adventure S. I reviewed it here:
https://www.citybike.com/bikes/rhymes-with-orange-2018-ktm-1290-super-adventure-s/

That bike is stupidly fast and powerful. It's as close to the feeling of a hopped up tube framed Buell as I have ridden. It's just not a tube framed Buell.

just rec’d an email from SJz hyperactive Injun dealer that 40+ FTRs are there - most spoken for, a few still available.....

I've seen them parked out front of spirit, as well as one when i pulled up to a stop light around the corner with someone riding it..dont know if he just bought it or was test riding..looks dope and seems like a fun bike..idk about the price tag though

agreed on looks & price - my other, big concerns are wet weight & how it feels thru an S-curve

the Trumpet Speed Twin surprised me in a good way by feeling diminutive at rest & pretty responsive when on Dry Creek Rd during test rides

the BMW shaft drives usedta rise up on the diff when on the throttle & get low when shut off, a cornering characteristic that put me off 20 yrs ago when I ended up purchasing my Buell - do they still do that?

regardless, Spirit sells Turnips + Injuns (+ Enfields) so comparisons are possible,
with SJ BMW right up the street......

Saw my friends new FTR1200 - not broken in yet, so I did not ride it.
It is bigger than I feared, but I make all motorcycles look like clown bikes.
One thing that took me aback was the f#@king lawyer induced warning screen, where you have to acknowledge that riding a motorcycle is a dangerous sport, before it will boot!!

Besides that, and some slightly too civilized mufflers - the R Nine T sounds more aggressive - it is a beautiful bike, and IMHO the most interesting bike coming out of the US in many years.
